Donald Raymond Hassig

Born on October 22, 1933 in Allen County Indiana, he was the son of John Cleveland Hassig and Lydia Froelich Hassig. His family moved to Sterling, Ohio where he graduated from high school and then attended Ohio University. Don retired from International Harvester after 34 years of service and later moved to Birmingham, Alabama to join his family. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Homewood and attended their Asbury Class.

Don is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lois St. John Hassig; daughter, Amy Hassig Smith (Mark); and by his son, Brad Hassig (Lori). He is also survived by five grandchildren he cherished, Harry, Camille, Lauren, Bridon, and Christian. Mr. Hassig was preceded in death by his grandson, Broughton Smith; brothers, Carl (Jeff), Ted, Paul, LeRoy, Arch, Art and Herman; and by his sisters, Esther and Bertha.

He was very dedicated and proud of his country as an Air Force Veteran. Don loved to travel to many parts of the world with family and friends. Volunteering at hospitals in Ohio, Indiana, and Alabama was a passion as well as delivering Heavenly Donuts to the Jimmie Hale Mission and Jessie’s Place 3 times a week for 6 years.

Friends are cordially invited to the reception and visitation with the family on Tuesday, the 4th of June, from five o’clock in the evening until seven o’clock in the evening at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood. Funeral Services for Mr. Hassig will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, the 5th of June, at Ridout’s Valley Chapel located at 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, Alabama 35209. In keeping with his love and service to our Country, military honors will commence at 1:15 p.m. at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama.

The family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions honoring the life of Donald Raymond Hassig be directed to a cause very dear to Don, the Jimmie Hale Mission located at 3420 2nd Avenue North, Birmingham, Alabama 35222.
