Betty Davis Womack, age 78, a longtime resident of Vestavia Hills and Tuscaloosa, passed away on June 23, 2016. She was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on November 16, 1937, to the late James Walter and Bessie Mae Spencer Davis. She was their only child. In December 1990 she moved from Tuscaloosa to the City of Vestavia Hills.
She attended public schools in Tuscaloosa and graduated from Tuscaloosa High School in 1955 where she played in the marching band for four years. Following high school, she attended and graduated from the University of Alabama in 1963. She continued her love of music at the University of Alabama and played in the Million Dollar Band for one year before starting a family, which became and remains her true passion. She loved learning and continued her formal education and earned a Master’s Degree from the University of Alabama in 1966.
After graduation she started her long and distinguished 25-year career as an educator. She was employed by the Tuscaloosa City School system for 22 years. She finished her teaching career in the Birmingham City School system, teaching three additional years. During her time as a teacher she taught primarily the fourth and sixth grades, retiring in 1994.
Betty is survived by her beloved husband, Lowell (Wally) Womack enjoying 51 years of a wonderful and loving marriage. Survivors are many and include four children, Cynthia Crawford Codina (Carlos) of Winter Park, FL, Bradley Davis Crawford (Cheryl) of Fayette, Lowell Womack, Jr. (Alice) of Mountain Brook, and Haley Womack Gregg (Derek) of Winter Park, FL, and eight grandchildren; Carlos Codina II, Courtney Codina, Derek Crawford (Misty), Christina Trikoris (Jason), Bailey Womack, Natalie Womack, Jack Gregg and Luke Gregg; and five step-great grandchildren.
Betty and Wally were always active and had many hobbies and interests. They enjoyed various types of boating and sailing. For many years, while living in Tuscaloosa, each weekend they could be found on the Black Warrior River house boating with friends and family. They also enjoyed sailing and took several sailing lessons in Florida and trips to the Caribbean. Betty and Wally loved to travel domestically and internationally and did often. They loved to share stories and pictures of their many trips together. Destinations included Europe, South America, Central America, Australia, the Mediterranean and the Far East. In addition to traveling Betty enjoyed golfing, dancing, going to church, and giving advice and sharing stories with her children and grandchildren.
The interment will take place 9:30 a.m. Monday, June 27, 2016 at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, AL. Please plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early to the interment. A memorial service will be held at 12: p.m. on June 27, 2016 at Ridout's Valley Chapel, 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL. The family will be available following the memorial service to greet friends and family.
Betty and Wally have been active members of Asbury United Methodist Church and in lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Asbury United Methodist Church’s Building Fund.
