Betty Clare Hudson Hawkins, widow of Honorable John Hawkins, longtime Alabama District 48 legislator. She was born to William and Madelyn Shaw Hudson on August 10, 1929 in Memphis Tenn. She passed away on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at the age of 82. Mrs. Hawkins attended Judson College in Marion, Al.
Mrs. Hawkins was owner and operator of Hawkins Bookstore and Hawkins Advertising. She was in sales and marketing with WBMG Channel 42.
Mrs. Hawkins was a founding member of Southminister Presbyterian Church, Charter member of Vestavia Country Club, Past President of Women's Committee of 100, Past Chairman of Men's Hall of Fame and Past President of Republican Women's Club of the South, past member of the Jefferson County executive committee of the Republican Party.
Mrs. Hawkins was predeceased by her husband of over 50 years John Hawkins, nephew Stuart Wall, and Brother in law Richard A Wall, Jr.
Mrs. Hawkins is survived by her sons John Harper Hawkins III (BJ), William Hudson Hawkins, Davis Heath Hawkins (Vicki). Grandchildren, Hunter Hawkins, Hudson Hawkins, Heath Hawkins, Elena Hawkins, Brittany Hawkins, John Hawkins and Jeff Hawkins. Sister-Charlotte Wall George (Richard), niece Carolyn Ealy (Shannon) and nephew Richard Wall (Erica) and her longtime friend and caregiver Kathy Strength.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 13, 2011 from 5-7pm at Ridout's Valley Chapel. Funeral services will be Monday, November 14,2011 at 2:00pm at Ridout's Valley Chapel. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
