He attended Glen Iris Elementary School, Phillips High School and graduated from Baylor School in Chattanooga. He served as a Seabee in the U.S. Navy Construction Battalion during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines. After discharge, he attended the University of Alabama where he became a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.
From 1953 until 1970, he was a resident of Montgomery where he was employed by GECC and then Guaranty Savings Life Insurance Co. He was also very active in Civitan International and St. James Methodist Church. In 1970, he returned to Birmingham to serve as agency vice president with Vulcan Life Insurance Co., which was succeeded by American Life and Casualty Co. After retiring in 1992, he volunteered at St. Vincent’s Hospital for 15 years.
He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Peggy Fox Sherrill of Decatur. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joann, and three sons, Arthur J. Fox, III, of Fair Haven; Thomas B. Fox (Pat) of Mountain Brook; Alexander F. Fox (Kay) of Clanton; one grandchild, Thomas Bryan Fox, Jr., (Jenny) of Columbus OH; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. He was a member of Canterbury United Methodist Church and the John Wesley Sunday School Class. He will be missed by all.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the efficient and loving care given by the nurses and staff of St. Vincent’s Oncology Unit and the Bruno Cancer Center, and to Drs. James Cantrell and Noah Fitzpatrick.
A celebration of his life will be held at Canterbury Center on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 4:00 pm; family visitation at the church parlor at 3:00. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Canterbury, to St. Vincent’s Hospital Auxiliary, Fair Haven Fountain of Love or to the charity of your choice.
