Alice Barlow Kitchings was born February 7, 1942. She was the daughter of James Walthall Barlow and Rosa McElroy Barlow. A native of Camden, Alabama, she was a graduate of Wilcox County High School, where she was a varsity cheerleader and a member of the F.H.A, and the Beta Club. As a Senior, she was named class Salutatorian. She was also chosen to represent Wilcox County as its Maid of Cotton.
Following her graduation from WCHS, Alice attended the University of Montevallo (formerly Alabama College), where she majored in French. In recognition of academic achievement in her major, she was inducted into Pi Delta Phi French Honor Society.
Alice’s love of reading led her to become employed as a librarian by Public Libraries in Jefferson County, Southern Research, and EBSCO Industries, Inc.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, William Joseph Kitchings, Sr., and her parents, James Walthall Barlow and Rosa McElroy Barlow.
She is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth Grainger Pressley (Kirk) and Susan Grainger Zellner (Eric); six grandchildren, Sarah Pressley, Anna Pressley, Olivia Zellner, Emma Frances Zellner, Cord Zellner, and Lucy Zellner; two sisters, Betty Barlow Davis Owens and Mary Barlow Horton; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 17, 2024 at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood, Alabama with burial immediately following at Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m.
