Robert Glenn “Bob” Young, 88, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2024 after a brief and heroic battle with cancer. Bob was born on February 2, 1936 in East St. Louis, Illinois. He moved to Florida in 1941. Bob was first and foremost a proud United States Marine. Like many patriotic men of his day, Bob left high school in 10th grade to join the fight for freedom in the Korean War in 1953. He served honorably and valiantly until his honorable discharge in 1957, receiving the Good Conduct Award and the National Defense Service Medal. He remained passionate about his Marine Corps heritage his entire life.
Bob joined Southern Bell and spent much of his life as a civil engineer. He worked with TWA building and maintaining the Kennedy Space Center infrastructure. He later worked on Telecom projects around the world, including in the Virgin Islands, Iran, and Puerto Rico, and was responsible for laying most of the fiber optic cable in the Brickell district of Miami. Bob also devoted much time serving his neighbors in Chapel Trail and Chapel Lake Estates on both homeowners’ associations.
Outside of work, Bob joined the brotherhood of the Freemasons in 1958. He obtained a pilot’s license in 1968 and flew single engine planes as a hobby. In 1980, Bob took up Tae Kwon Do karate and attained the level of 2nd degree black belt. In his later years, Bob became an avid ice hockey fan cheering on his grandson, Hunter DePorter, all through Hunter’s travel, Junior and College Hockey days, and ultimately becoming a passionate Florida Panthers fan.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, Carl Owen Young and Hulda Faye (Schong) Young. Bob was the devoted husband of 28 years to Dawn Marie (Oloroso) Young until her death on March 23, 2012. He is survived by his stepdaughter Cindy Marie DePorter, grandson Hunter DePorter, sons Keith Young and Dale Young, daughters Karen (Young) Berman and Cyndi Young, grandchildren Samantha Berman, Rachel Berman, Alexandra Young, Casey Ellingson, and great-grandchild Oliver Ellingson.
