Russel Jay Bartels Sr., aged 73, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, October 8, 2023 in Zeeland, MI. His life, much like a long, winding road traveled on a motorcycle, was filled with adventure, purpose, and unforgettable moments. Each turn, hill, and valley he navigated stands in testament to the decisions he made and the experiences he embraced with open arms. A chapter of his life saw him as a devout man of God, and another as a fearless fireman and the charismatic president of the Redemption Riders Motorcycle Ministry, leading with strength and discipline. But among these roles, the title he cherished most was that of a family man.
He is now reunited with his parents, Julius and Tena Bartels, and his beloved brothers, Terry and Richard Bartels. Left to cherish his memories are his adoring wife of 50 years, Merry; children Russel (Rachael) Bartels Jr , Tonya (Ryan) Grotenhuis, Richard (Sue) Bartels and Trisha (Bryan) Assink; grandchildren Elijah Hays, Collin (Josilyn) Grotenhuis, Kayla (Scott) Newman, Amber (Ty) Potter, Megan Grotenhuis, Abby Bobo, Samantha Assink, Isabel Assink, Olivia Grotenhuis, Zachary Assink, Avary Bartels, and Aubree Assink; great-grandchildren Kayson and Ryder Hays. He is also survived by his siblings Chet (Iona) Bartels, Betty Thomas, Judy (John) Vugteveen, Joyce (Lester) Haveman, Mary (Don) Lamer, John (Gwen) Bartels, Shelly Bartels, Hugh (Shelly) Bartels, and Helen (Gordon) Patscot; His sibling In-laws Larry (Arlene) Nienhuis, Sharon Lemmen, and Debra Riemersma; and many nieces and nephews.
Born in Zeeland, MI on July 11, 1950, Russ’ journey led him to become a beacon of strength and dedication for his family and community. As a Vietnam War navy veteran, he bravely served his country, showcasing resilience and honor. His professional journey as an automation engineer demonstrated his brilliance and problem-solving prowess. He volunteered on the Zeeland City Fire Department for 21 years. His hands, adept at both intricate woodworking and fixing machines, were a testament to his craftsmanship and passion.
He and his wife, Merry, had been members of 3rd CRC in Zeeland for 48 years.
Russ’ journey may have reached its sunset, but the memories of the ride will forever echo in the hearts of those who loved him. The family will be holding a visitation at Third Christian Reformed Church, 10 W Central Ave., Zeeland from 4-7pm Thursday. A funeral service will be held 1:00pm on Friday, October 13th at Third Christian Reformed Church, 10 W Central Ave., Zeeland, Pastor Mark Timmer presiding, with interment at Zeeland Cemetery.
