He was born in Zeeland, Michigan on August 12, 1943 to Case and Catherine Karsten.
He graduated in 1961 from Holland Christian School, and then joined the National Guard. He worked as a mechanic for Vanden Berg Motors and then Crown Motors until his retirement. He was a member of the Tulip City Rod and Gun Club, which he very much enjoyed. Jim also loved motorcycles and being on the road but his greatest love was his family. He married his wife of 53 years, Nancy, in 1965 and together they had three children Tim and Rita Karsten, Rick and Patience Karsten and Julie and Dave Duimstra. He is also survived by eight grandchildren Alissa and Taran Andrews, Will Duimstra, Ben Duimstra, Ellie Duimstra, Moise Karsten, Marie Noel Karsten, Nick Karsten and Levi Karsten; one great-grandson, Troy Henry Andrews; brothers and sisters Ken and Sharon Karsten, Don and Sara Karsten, Marj and Wayne Dennis.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
