Allen was born in Zeeland, Michigan, on February 5, 1926, and graduated from Zeeland High School. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944, and proudly served during WWII. He trained at Camp Croft in South Carolina, was deployed to Germany, and served as first scout in his platoon. Allen was in active combat and played dead to survive German bullets passing over his head. He later served in communication in Allied Headquarters in Vienna, Austria. Back in Michigan, he worked at Herman Miller for many years. Allen was a charter member of Faith Reformed Church in Zeeland, Michigan. He volunteered with Jubilee Ministries and Lakeshore Habitat for Humanity.
Allen is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth; daughters, Linda (Erwin) South, Jeanne (Richard) Reynolds, and Kristi, all of Zeeland, MI; 3 granddaughters; 6 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00pm, Sunday July 17, 2016, at Faith Reformed Church, 220 W. Central Avenue, Zeeland, MI 49464, with Reverend Dave Smits officiating. Burial has taken place in Zeeland Cemetery.
