U. C. was a graduate of Marion County High School Class of 1952 where he played football, baseball, and basketball. A U S Army veteran, he loved nature, and was an avid hunter and fisherman, he especially loved making a garden.
U. C. was a member and served on the board of the Greater Chattanooga Christian Services. He was a member and Elder of the Middle Valley Church of Christ. He was retired from DuPont after 35 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Coleen Wicks Puryear; his parents, U. C. and Helen Burnette Puryear; his brothers, Charles and Howard; and sister, Bobbie Headrick, and Billie Bailey; and granddaughter, Amy Michelle Puryear.
U. C. is survived by his daughter, Tammy (Jo) Puryear; and son, Randy Puryear; his brother, Carl Puryear; sister, Vera Burdette; grandchildren, Katie (Chris), Krista (Jason, Andy (Jessica), and Adam; Great-grandchildren, Logan, Caden, Jayden, and Jayce.
A mentor and father to many, he was loved and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be conducted from the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Saturday November 18, 2023, at 2:00 PM, with Minister Larry Clements, and Minister John Cupp officiating. Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Friday evening November 17.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Greater Chattanooga Christian Services, or Hospice of Chattanooga.
