Bob Dorrill was born October 13, 1931 in Houston, TX. He graduated Reagan High School, and the received both his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Economics from Baylor University, where he met his first wife, Nan. He entered the United States Air Force and served as the Navigator for a B-47 Crew, obtaining the rank of Captain. Following the USAF, he worked for the Dallas Morning News, then the Sunday School Board in Nashville. In 1969, he moved the family to Chattanooga when he accepted a position at Provident Life and Accident. After early retirement in 1987, he taught economics at Chattanooga State for another ten years.
He met and married Joan in 1997, and they enjoyed 25 years together, mostly at their home in St. Augustine, Florida. During those years, he played tennis for the Marsh Creek Country Club men’s team, and also expanded his love for photography exhibiting much of his work in local galleries. They returned to their home in Chattanooga in 2014.
Bob set a wonderful godly example of how to be a husband and a father. His love and devotion to both Nan until her death and then Joan until his death, were evident for all to see. He was a terrific father to Dan and Ellen and helped shape their lives for the successes they are today.
He leaves a legacy of all those he influenced over the years. Whether family, friends or professional colleagues, he will always be remembered for his kindness, integrity, and putting others before himself. He was a man of character, the same in private as in public.
Most importantly, he deeply loved Jesus Christ. He gave his life to Him at a young age and his faith never waivered. His faith shaped him as the man he became and remained until his death.
A celebration of his life will be Friday, July 15th, beginning with visitation at Noon, followed by the Service and burial. Officiating is Dr. John E. Simons. This will take place at the North Chapel, Chattanooga Funeral Home, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN 37343.
