She was born in Chattanooga to Charles and Josie (Bowling) Rhinehart. She graduated from Central High School and attended the University of Chattanooga. She was a lifelong member of Spring Creek Road Baptist Church. Mary Jo was blessed with a 53-year marriage to the late George Douglas Smith whom she wed in the immediate aftermath of World War II.
Mary Jo lived a life full of grace, strength and beauty. Her love for family was endless. Her greatest gift was that of caring for others in ways both great and small. She was a blessing in the world and especially to all who knew her.
Mary Jo was predeceased by her husband, daughter, Marty Smith Bell, and granddaughter, Kelly Bell Smith. She is survived by two daughters, Jan Smith Nelson (Jim) and Mitzi Smith, both of Chattanooga; three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews whom she loved as if they were her own.
A family graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, June 28, at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
