Mary Joyce Brown, 81, went home to be with the Lord on March 31 2022, with her family by her side. She was born in Chattanooga on November 9, 1940 to parents Herman Boyd and Mary Mildred Lamb. Mary Joyce graduated from Central High School in 1958 and went on to receive her undergrad degree from the University of Chattanooga. She began a career as an elementary teacher that would go on to last for 23 years.
She was married to the late Philip Brown for 37 years, with whom she raised 3 children. Mary Joyce was a devoted wife and a caring mother, who always had a meal on the table for her family and any friends, family or church members who happened to be at the house or needed a place to spend the holidays. Mary Joyce & Phil were dedicated church members, singing in the church choir, teaching Sunday school, and making sure her kids were in church any time the doors were open.
After the untimely death of her husband, Mary Joyce went on to travel the world on numerous mission trips, from caring for orphans in Russia to giving out copies of the Jesus film in France and other mission trips in the States. She also had many adventures traveling with girlfriends and church groups from Florida to Alaska to Europe. Mary Joyce kept her schedule full when she wasn’t traveling. She spent countless hours volunteering with Choices, WMBW, local soup kitchens, Samaritans Purse and other various charitable organizations. Aside from her busy travel schedule, Mary Joyce poured out her time, love and generosity on her 8 grandchildren, from vacations to tea parties and birthday parties to graduations.
She was an active member of Silverdale Baptist Church and very involved with the Primetimers group. She was determined to not let life pass her by, and for a self-described wallflower, she became anything but.
Mary Joyce is survived by her brother Charles Lamb (Linda) and her three children: Julie Hurley (Darin), Edward Brown (Jennifer), and Laurie Almand (Tensley). She is also survived by eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Silverdale Baptist Church on Saturday April 9 at noon with visitation beforehand at 11:00.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mary Joyce’s name to Silverdale Baptist Church and Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.chattanooganorthchapel.com for the Brown family.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel, 5401 Hwy 153, Hixson, TN 37343.
