Joan Christopher Duncan, 67, of Hixson, Tennessee passed away peacefully at her home on January 7, 2018. Joan was a loving wife, mother, Gran, sister, aunt, and friend to all who knew her. Her love and compassion knew no boundaries. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of Beulah Chapel. Joan was a graduate of Ider High School. She received her undergraduate degree from Jacksonville State University in secondary education, where she also served as the yearbook editor. She continued her education at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga where she received two master degrees, one in English and one in Counseling. Joan’s career was dedicated to the Dade County School System where she held many roles including an English teacher, Guidance Counselor and Delta Kappa Gamma member. She continued to teach as an adjunct professor at UTC in the Education Department. She was also dedicated to the Hixson community, where she volunteered at Hixson High School as the football booster club president for several years, as well as supporting her children through numerous sporting events over the years. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Dalpha Christopher; brother, Jackie Christopher; nephew, Dale Christopher and niece, Cassidy Gaddis.Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Lester Duncan; children, Kendal (Jim) Helms and Andrew Duncan; grandchildren, Hunter, Zac, Zoe and Malakai; brothers, Dewey (Pat) Gass, Tommy (Debbie) Christopher, and Gary (Melody) Gaddis; sisters, Peggy (Michael) Bray and Teresa (Mike) Lea and many nieces and nephews. Joan is also survived by her lifelong friends, the Iderettes, Shelia Wright, Mary Jane Epperson, and Rita Downer. Joan’s compassion led her to become a loyal donator to St. Jude and many other charities. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in memory of Joan to St. Jude, the ALS Association, http://www.alsa.org/ or a charity that has a special meaning. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 from 12 pm to 8 pm at Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel. A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2018 from 11 am to 12 pm with a funeral service following at 12 pm. Interment to follow at Beulah Chapel Cemetery in Ider, Alabama.
