Herman met the love of his life, Mary K, in his senior year of high school and they were married 2 years later. They were married 64 years prior to Herman’s passing. Herman served in the U. S. Navy in Jacksonville, FL where they lived.
Herman is survived by his wife Mary K. Ford Sledge, his children Lisa (Billy) Newell and Herman F. (Sherry) Sledge, III; his grandchildren Beth Newell, Casey (Sydra) Newell and Herman F. (Mindy) Sledge, IV. Also surviving are his great grandchildren Madeline Rose Sledge, Jade Sophia Newell, Grayson Foree Fredrick Sledge and Bristol Tate Sledge. His sisters Donna Serena, Elizabeth Tate and Laverne Wallace and his special children Dr. Brenda Ross, Wayne Orr, Sallie McDonald and Drew McDonald.
Herman was so grateful for the Godly men in his life who walked every step of his cancer journey with him: Billy Newell, Terry Adams, Walter Ally, Dr. Joe Evans, Drew McDonald, Wayne Orr, and Glenn Wilson.
A member of Dallas Bay Church, Herman felt that one of the accomplishments of his life was the wonderful family he and Mary K had together. His life was filled with service to others as evidenced by the Hero of the Year Award he received in November, 1980 for having saved 5 people’s lives. A modest man, few people ever heard the stories of these acts of heroism.
The family requests there be no flowers.
