Henry Clay Owens Jr. passed away peacefully on September 9, 2024 at the age of 84. He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years Barbarah Owens, son Clay Owens (Rebecca) of Greenville ,SC, adoring grandchildren, sisters Barbara Jean Hamrick and Margaret Burke of Hixson, TN and Shirley Mabee (Rick) of Signal Mountain, TN. He is preceded in death by father Henry Clay Owens and mother Mary McCrary and step-mother Inez all of Signal Mountain, TN.
Henry was born on July 18, 1940 in Chattanooga, TN to Henry Clay Owens and Mary Owens {nee McCrary}. Henry married Barbarah Josephine Varnes, “My baby” in 1959. Henry was a skilled machinist and focused his unrelenting tenacity for hard work into starting Owens Amusement Company in 1973. In 2000, he bravely ventured into a new field by opening and running B&O Trucking with his wife Barbarah.
Henry and Barbarah enjoyed travelling, especially to Las Vegas. He was passionate about dirt bikes! He spent countless days out riding with his son Clay. They enjoyed travelling and riding the motorcross circuit for many years. Eventually they transitioned that time together onto the golf course replacing adrenaline with verbal banter…and boy could he banter! If he liked you, he would poke fun at you but if he loved you, he might jab you relentlessly.
Pop, your charisma would arrive with personality and presence to fill up the room. Being the baby brother of three doting sisters, it’s no wonder you liked hearing how handsome you were and being the center of attention. We called you Henry, H, HC, Pop and Papaw. Your redheaded temper helped solidify a stereo-typical reputation, but within your lucky circle, you revealed the big-hearted, generous teddy bear underneath it all. You were stubborn and cantankerous but also funny and playful, always up for a good time; easy to laugh and easy to love. We will miss it all, and you, so very much.
