Newell was a longtime resident of the Chattanooga area and served our country during the Korean War in the U. S. Army. He owned and operated Service Electric for over 20 years and owned the Honda Motorcycle Shop on Highway 153 for several years. Newell was a member of New Salem Baptist Church. He was an avid Tennessee Vols fan and an expert cabinet maker. Newell loved life and was a good friend to everyone he met. Newell held memberships in the Masonic Lodge, IBEW Local # 175, and loved boating, fishing and motorcycle riding.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Karen E. Johnson; son, David Wayne Johnson; parents, Charles and Jewell Johnson; brothers, Gilbert and Charles Johnson and his dog, Benjie.
Newell is survived by his daughters, Carol (Tom) Phillips and Patricia Craig; ten grandchildren, Kara and Kelly Craig, Phoebe and Michael Cox, Nathan Jones, John Johnson, Maggie and Peter Fotiadis and Katie and Thomas Stangarone; eleven great grandchildren and his faithful dog, Mikayla; former son-in-law, Nicky Fotiadis; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday and 8 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the North Chapel.
Services for Newell will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the North Chapel with Rev. Ted Painter officiating. Burial will follow in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East on Shallowford Road.
Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist.
