John Paul Lipscomb, age 85, of White Lake, passed away Saturday, October 14, 2023, at his home. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Janet; his two children: Paul (Mary Lynn) Lipscomb, and Beth Lipscomb; his three grandchildren: Sarah (Logan Ward) Lipscomb, Matthew Charles Lipscomb, and Grace Catherine Lipscomb; and his brother, Patrick Lipscomb.
John was born April 18, 1938, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Jack and Mary (Johnson) Lipscomb. He met the love of his life, Janet Bourassa, at Shrine of the Little Flower High School in Royal Oak. John and Janet were married on May 7, 1960. They shared 63 wonderful years together.
John proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was stationed in Kansas from 1961 until his honorable discharge in 1963. John owned his own business, Steel Equipment Company, for many years until his retirement. In earlier years, John enjoyed boating, snowmobiling and spending time with family and friends at his cottage in norther Michigan. Upon retirement he moved to Florida and worked “part-time” as the marina manager of Burnt Store Marina Country Club. One couldn’t travel around the property without hearing, “Hi John!” many times over. He could have easily been mistaken for the mayor.
In his later years John still enjoyed golfing, playing cards, and traveling with Janet in their motorhome. He was a lifelong car enthusiast and did his best to keep the local car wash in the black. In recent years he enjoyed watching the news and spending time in the company of family and friends. Weekly Mass attendance was a non-negotiable throughout his life. Even when health reasons kept him home, he watched Mass on TV.
Although he never wrote a book, it’s possible that if he did it would have been titled, “I Tease You (Because I Like You)”. Few things made him laugh harder than stirring the pot and getting someone fired up (all in good fun and never with ill intent). He was a wonderful, generous man who will be greatly missed.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Mary; his grandson, John Paul Lipscomb II; and his older sister, Sharon Culbertson.
A Funeral Mass will take place at 11:00 am on Friday, October 20, 2023, at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 3700 Harvey Lake Road, Highland, Michigan 48356. John’s family will receive visitors at the Highland Chapel of the Elton Black & Son Funeral Home, 3295 E. Highland Road, Highland, Michigan 48356, on Thursday, October 19, 2023, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, and again at church on Friday from 10:00 am until the time of Mass at 11:00 am. In accordance with John’s wishes, cremation will follow. John will be laid to rest at All Saints Cemetery in Waterford at a later date.
