in High Point, North Carolina, after a long illness. Mr. Millar, known as Jim to his
friends, was born on March 22, 1933, in Rolla, Missouri, only son of Leola Faudree
and Charles J. Millar. He attended Rolla High School, and choosing to forego gradua
tion, entered the Missouri School of Mines (now the University of Missouri at Rolla)
in pursuit of a degree in chemical engineering. While at MSM, he was a member
and commander of the Gamma Xi Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity and ROTC. Having
earned four athletic letters while in high school, he continued to play football for the
Miners and intramural sports at MSM.
After graduation, as a member of the Army Reserve, he was called to service in Korea
at the Headquarters of the 3rd Engineer Battalion, Army Corps of Engineers. During this
time, he served as Combat Engineer Unit Commander and Adjutant.
When he returned to the States, his career took him to Oklahoma, Missouri, Pennsyl-
vania, New York and North Carolina. His career encompassed the oil and natural gas
industries, cement manufacture for US Steel and most recently, non-woven textiles for
J.P. Stevens and Dexel Bonded Fiber in High Point. In addition to his profession, Jim was
a creative woodworker, expert bridge player/teacher and a great lover of literature.
Jim was married to Judith Collins Millar in 1974, who resides at their
home. He took great pride in his children: Dorothy Perrel/Virginia Beach, VA;
Susan Millar Lewis/Townsend, MA; Marian (Mim) Millar/Saranac Lake, NY; Charles Millar/
Hudson, NY; Douglas Millar/St. Louis, MO/ Brendan McColl/Adelaide, AU/eighteen
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sister, Nancy Lee
Mengel, of Rolla, Missouri.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2011, at 11:00AM at St.
Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 303 Eastchester Dr., High Point, Father Kenneth
Kroohs officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to your favorite charity
