Gsell - Joseph G., 92, of Levittown, NY, passed away suddenly on July 6th, 2023. Joe was born on November 24th, 1930 in Queens, NY. After high school, Joe went on to SUNY at Oswego where he received his degree in Education. After tragically losing both his parents in his college years, he forged his own path in his teaching career at the newly constructed John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore, NY, where he was a beloved industrial arts teacher and a master at teaching photography, printing, and wood shop for over 30 years. He met Rose Marie Imburgia during his first teaching position. They married on August 20th, 1955 and went on to raise 5 children. He cared for Rose for many years as she suffered from Multiple Sclerosis, a little-known disease at the time. He dedicated his life to her care and comfort until her death in 1991. He later met Anita Newman, his loving companion for many years. Together they had a wonderful life, filled with family and the things they loved to do together. Joe was a brilliant man of many talents and had a thirst for lifelong learning. He had a passion for gardening, photography, woodworking, cooking, classical music and was an avid reader. He loved baseball and the NY Times. He loved the beach and was there as often as possible. Joe inspired those around him to see and create new possibilities. His passions overflowed into a deep love for his community and friends and his neighbors will remember him for bringing over vegetables from his beautiful garden. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He was very proud of their broad range of accomplishments. Joe was predeceased by his wife Rose Marie; and his sisters Dell, Mary, and Betty. He is survived by his companion Anita Newman. He was a loving father to Thomas (Kim),
Laura (Bob) McNamara, Anne Hale, Joan (Dave) Strodel, and Teresa (Jeff) Ehrman. He was a proud grandfather of Sean (Taly), Nicole (Jake), Kevin, Kristina, Michael, Sarah (Conor), Rachel, Emilia, Gillian, and Charlie. Visitation is July 23rd, 2023 at Vernon C. Wagner Funeral Home, 2-6 pm, Hicksville, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to MS Dream Center of Rhode Island, www.msdreamcenter.org, in memory of Rose Gsell.
