With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of John F. McKinney, born on January 11, 1961, to loving parents John and Freida McKinney. John left us peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, on September 18, 2024. He was a cherished husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and dear brother, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, joy, and unwavering support.
John was the beloved husband of Carol McKinney, his partner in life and love. Together, they built a beautiful family and created countless memories, from cozy evenings at home to adventurous Saturdays spent exploring estate sales in search of unique treasures. Their shared passion for art led them to curate a delightful collection that reflected their shared journey and the love they found in each piece.
As a father, John poured his heart into every moment spent with his son, Sean McKinney. Whether coaching Sean’s CYO basketball and baseball teams or cheering from the sidelines, John was always present, instilling values of teamwork, perseverance, and the joy of sports. He took immense pride in witnessing Sean’s growth and achievements, and their bond was a source of strength for both.
John’s role as a grandfather was one of his greatest joys. He cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren, Dillon Pereyra and Cameron Armijo, creating a special bond filled with laughter and shared adventures. His gentle spirit and infectious enthusiasm left an indelible mark on their lives.
A man of many passions, John was an avid basketball fan who enjoyed reminiscing about his own high school games while collecting basketball cards and watching games. His love for the sport continued as he passionately followed his favorite teams, often sharing spirited discussions about games with family and friends.
Music was another of John’s great loves. He was a devoted fan of the Grateful Dead, collecting everything from art to rare vinyl. Each piece held a story, a memory that connected him to the music that defined a generation and to the friends he shared it with. John’s spirit was brightened by the melodies that filled his home, and he found joy in sharing that love with others.
In addition to his many interests, John had a deep appreciation for the simple pleasures in life. He loved nothing more than driving down the open road with the windows down, taking in the sights and sounds around him. His fondness for Dunkin’ Donuts was well-known, and he found joy in his daily rituals, whether it was savoring a cup of coffee or sharing a laugh with friends.
Professionally, John was dedicated to his work, loved the law and took great pride in his career. He thrived on the art of negotiation, and his passion for his craft was evident in everything he did. John was known for his unwavering commitment to his team and his work, continuing to inspire those around him until the very last week of his life. His colleagues respected and loved him and the feelings were mutual.
John is survived by his beloved wife Carol, his loving son Sean, cherished grandchildren Dillon and Cameron, dear siblings Sheila McKinney, Henry McKinney and Colm McKinney and his adored furry companions, Victory and Murphy. He leaves behind a legacy of love that will resonate through the lives he touched.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at Vernon C. Wagner Funeral Homes, located at 125 W. Old Country Road, Hicksville, New York 11801. The family invites friends and loved ones to join them for a Words of Remembrance in John’s memory during the evening session from 7-9 PM.
A Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday at 10:45 AM at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 500 S. Oyster Bay Road, Hicksville, New York. Final disposition will be private.
