LUTHER JUNIOR SIGMON NEWTON – Luther Junior Sigmon, 89, of Newton went home to be with his Lord on October 19, 2014 at his residence surrounded by his family. Born on February 3, 1925 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Lonnie Manson and Grace Pearl Settlemyre Sigmon. Luther served in the US Navy during WW II from 1944 to 1946. After the Navy he entered college at Clemson University and graduated in 1952 in textile management. He worked for Burlington Industries for twenty years. Luther retired from Samson Ocean Systems in 1990 after 17 years. He loved to work in his garden and grow vegetables for his family and friends. Luther served his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and choir member. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his, brothers, Ralph, George, Carroll, Festus, Cecil Sigmon; sisters, Lois Bollinger, and Lula Mae Savage. Survivors include his loving wife of 72 years, Ruth Stamey Sigmon of Newton, children, Barry L. Sigmon and wife Beth of Newton, Julie S. Chandler and husband Roger of Athens, Ala; grandchildren, Candice C. Rogers and husband Ben of Wallingford, PA, Jason Chandler and wife Sarah of Colorado Springs, CO, Ashley, Katlyn, Taylor Sigmon of Newton; great-grandchildren, James, Will, Josh Chandler of Colorado Springs, Addison, Henry, and Luke Rogers of PA; sisters, Grace S. Hefner of Abernethy Laurels and Nellie Sigmon of Trinity Village. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at 2 PM at Catawba Funerals & Cremations with Dr. Ed Yount officiating. Entombment will follow at Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 from 6-7:30 PM at the funeral home.
