Jean was born in Monico, Wisconsin on January 10, 1928 to the late Guy E. Daily and Magdaline Cholewinski. She is also preceded in death by her husband Jim Jewell, one son, Michael Nolte, four brothers; Lyle, Frank, Guy, and George Dailey and five sisters; Helen Checki, Eleanor Wilson, Alice Hanson, Mary Schaetzel and Doris Johnson.
Jean was an elementary teacher in Pelican Lake, Wisconsin, Three Lakes, Wisconsin and Rhinelander, Wisconsin. She was elementary principal at Central School in Rhinelander, Wisconsin and Pelican School in Rhinelander, Wisconsin for seventeen years. She was very active in many organizations, was elected for a three year term in the National Elementary Principals’ Association representing Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin, In 1988 she was named Wisconsin’s Distinguished Elementary Principal of the Year.
In 2014 Jean moved to Pinecrest Retirement Home in Hickory, North Carolina to be closer to family. She participated in and led many activities at the home. One of her favorites was dancing – especially the polka and jitterbug. She was also known as the “puzzle lady.” She always had a picture puzzle ready to be completed.
She is survived by seven children: Nancy (Nick) Nolte-Maney Meer, Linda (Mike) Nolte Rierdon, Jeff (Lynn) Jewell, Dave (Beth) Jewell, Marie Jewell, Kathy (Alan) Secrest and Rebecca (Ken) Nyberg; Sister, Shirley Rose and brothers; Walter (Charlotte) Dailey and Ora (Harleen) Dailey; seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at a later date in Rhinelander, Wisconsin.
