I called several of our Baton School classmates to see if they could recall any little stories which had to do with Wink.  Butch Smith had a very cute and funny story which I will try to relay as he told it.
Butch said they were in the 7th or 8th grade and were down at the river -Castle Bridge.  He said most people back then didn't have a trailer for their boat.. .a lot of the boats were just wooden fishing boats.  They just hooked them up to a post with a chain and lock.  He said this man came in with his boat, chained it and used a combination lock and locked the chain. 
Butch said Winkie was standing up behind the man, watching him and said, " I can unlock that lock there."  The man sputtered and fussed, told him he was crazy that he would have to have the combination.  Winkie said, "I can unlock that lock!"  The man told him to go ahead and unlock it, if he were so smart. 
Butch said Winkie took a shoestring out of his shoe, wrapped it around the lock and pulled it real hard like someone would pull the rope on a lawnmower to get it started.  Low and behold the lock popped open.  The man sputtered some more and used a few choice words.  He said he would be back shortly.  He left, went over to Valdese and came back with a lock and key to lock his boat.
Butch went on to say, he had tried numerous times to open a combination lock like Winkie did, but he has never been able to do it.  He went on to say, "I wonder how in the world he did it!"  I do, too, but I'm not surprised that Wink could do that.
Sherrie, Winkie's Family and loved ones - I wish I could be with you as you honor and share so many good times you had with the boy and man       Glenn "Winkie"/"Wink" McGinnis.  May the many many wonderful and fun memories you shared with him lift your hearts, bring you smiles and comfort you in the days ahead.  .  . and may the peace of God surround you!

I was very saddened to hear of  Winkie's death.  From the photos shared on the tribute page, it is evident the two of you had a wonderful relationship and marriage.  I truly am happy for my grade school  classmate and friend that he met you his love, married you and you both together shared so much happiness. You have so many good memories for which to be thankful.
Winkie and I grew up in the Baton Community, and we both attended Mountain Grove Baptist Church.  Also, we were classmates at Baton Elementary School thru the 8th grade.  
Winkie was quite intelligent much to the chagrin of the teachers as he seemed to like to "rustle their feathers"   (just a little, of course) and sometimes, maybe, to see how far he could push before the hatchet or should I say "the paddle fell".  I don't think he wanted them to know how smart he really was because then knew he would have more and harder work to do. Also, you may be surprised, or not, that it was a little difficult for Winkie to sit still for very long. . .the term used for that now is  hyper or hyperactive.  Bless his heart!


So sorry for your loss. Swap and Shop you will be missed. We really enjoyed all the times we got to spend together. Prayers for your family during this difficult time.

Praying for the family as I ponder memories of Wink.  If there is one thing that I'll never forget about him, it was his love for his family and friends. I'll also always credit him (and Sherry) for introducing me to cruising and getting me on my first plane. He was truly one of a kind and kept everyone on their toes with his quick wit. Prayers for peace and comfort in the coming days to Sherry and the family.

It is hard to pick just one memory with my pawpaw to share because I have so many, and for that I am grateful. Although I am sad that he is no longer here on earth with us I rejoice in the fact that I know I will see him again. I hope that I have made him proud. His smile was so contagious and although he did not express it often you could just tell the love he had for my mawmaw, his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. I will forever cherish the talks that we had about life, drinking beer together, and the fun times we had on cruises.  He had the ability to provide a witty comeback for almost any conversation, something that he definitely passed onto everyone in our family. You never knew what little pun he had just waiting for the conversation, but you knew that there would be one, followed by that smile and laugh that he loved to show off.  

This is my dad. A stubborn hard headed man. He was a man of great knowledge, had unthinkable skills, could sing and dance wonderfully, mix probably any drink, and knew every joke ever told. It's hard to think he's gone. As I was writing this I had to go back and correct my grammer from present tense to past tense. My mind and heart have not come to terms with all that has happened. I'm so sad about events in my life he won't be part of because as everyone knows he brings a special part of him that's hard to forget. However, I feel relieved and happy to know he is no longer suffering.  We all have experienced love and some more than others can say what it's like to tell someone you love them and feel like they'll never quite understand the depth of the love that is trying to be expressed in 3 little words. I dont think my dad ever knew how much I loved him? Learn from those around you and love like never before. We never know when our last day  will be.  May all our actions carry forward and demonstrate love.   Like my daddy, we may not say it alot but our actions show and demonstrate love. Thank you Glenn McGinnis Sr. for loving me in all the actions you demonstrated. Thank you for all you have  done and given me leading to my wonderful adulthood life. You'll be missed in so many ways.
