I'll add this because I'm proud to be a part of his legacy in any small way.  Dennis lived a while in my house on Taboga.  He did while the Choy Lee went its way to the deep and he left for California and swore to never return lest days of Balboas would claim him.  They didn't.  Dennis told me of Gary Stump's demise.  Dennis told me where to go to get a bridge for my teeth.  Dennis used to sleep on my discarded couch in his container at PMBC and build campfires out front some mornings.  He was part Cherokee and related to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.  This is a guy that helped make the PMBC happen by just being a regular.  This is a guy that cannot be forgotten and won't be.

I just thought of Dennis and did a search.  I'd been wondering if he'd made it through Covid.  After he left Panama for the states to be closer to his sister, we had been in some contact, and I was proud to be there.  I go back with Dennis to the PMBC.  In fact, I lived on the OMKAR right beside where Dennis's boat that he sailed down to Panama finally sank.  It's still there.  What a loss.  My god.  He was an upstanding guy and as fair and honest and straightforward as they come.  I don't think many people here know that he's left port.  I was thinkin' I might call him tonight.  It's a great way to go to sleep and think about doing that.

You're good, buddy.  You know that, I know.  Thanks for being here.

I am saddened to report the passing of Dennis Thackeray. A longtime resident of Taboga Island, and later of Coronado, he was for two years my friend and neighbor in San Carlos. A lifelong surfer and singular character, Dennis spent many years as a commercial fisherman on the central coast of California. When he retired from fishing Dennis built his own boat and ventured south along the Pacific Coast of Mexico and Central America, eventually settling in Panama. He was known to many at the Balboa Yacht Club, where he was known to be helpful to many mariners. I had the great pleasure of knowing him and sharing my house in San Carlos. RIP Dennis, you are greatly missed.
