Calvin Lew Black, 76, of Henderson, passed away November 17, 2023 in Henderson, Nevada. Calvin was born on October 10, 1947 in Panguitch, Utah, to Palma Price and Lew Ence Black. He graduated from Basic High School and received a B.S. in Engineering from UNLV. He married Charlene Adams on March 21, 1970, in the St. George Temple.
Calvin was a licensed Civil Engineer and Professional Land Surveyor. He worked for VTN, Clark County, and then almost 38 years for G. C. Wallace, Inc. before his retirement in 2014. He was a member of the American Public Works Association (Life Member), the American Society of Civil Engineers (Life Member), and the Citizens Advisory Committee for the Clark County Regional Flood Control District. He was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, served in the Southwest British Mission from 1966-68 and served for many years in the Nevada, Las Vegas Temple. Calvin loved to go hunting with family and friends, pick up the tab for dinner, and have family reunions at his cabin near Zion National Park.
He is preceded in death by parents, sister (Leila “Dene” Taylor), son (Lang), and grandchild (Adeline).
He is survived by his wife, brother (Harold “Andy”), children: Kayann Jongsma (Mark), Calvin (Carrie), Sarah Hessing (Kenneth), Adam (Heather), Joseph (Jenni), Morgan Whitmore (Bryan), Chelsi Nielsen (Morgan), 32 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held November 27, 2023 from 10-11 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 400 S. Water Street in Henderson, Nevada. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 26, 2023 from 4-6 p.m. at Palm Mortuary, 800 S. Boulder Highway in Henderson, Nevada and before the services from 9-10 a.m. at the Water Street Church.
