Celebrating the life of Alven Washington Sr., born December 13, 1946 in Seyppel, Arkansas to the union of George and Verneda Washington, both who preceded him in death. He was the second of seven children. He was raised in a Christian home. His sister, Doris, could not say "baby brother" and that's where he got the name "Boe". Duchess will truly miss her daily naps on his lap.
Alven attended the campus of Durfee and Central High. In July 1966, Uncle Sam said "I want you." Basic camp was in Fort Knox, KY and off to Fort Lee, VA. His next tour of duty was off to Vietnam, returning home with an Honorable Discharge.
He worked at Ford Motor Co. frame plant and later as Mass Telecommunication Services as a cable technician. While laying cable at Ford Field, he met James Brown, Howie Long, and Terry Bradshaw.
He met the love of his life, Judi Winn, and they eloped to Toledo, OH on May 23, 1994. Alven and Judi got a part time job as ushers at Pontiac Silverdome. Yes, they saw all of the Detroit Lions home games. They also saw Pope John II's full mass; FIFA World Cup - Brazil vs Sweden; Elton John and Billy Joel concerts, and PAPARAZZI at the Detroit Opera House.
Alven had a passion for Judi's gumbo, jambalaya, red beans and rice, black eyed peas and cornbread, and her northern beans. No worries about washing dishes, the plate was always clean.
He enjoyed bid whist, dominoes, jigsaw puzzles, sudoku, word search, listening to jazz and dancing the night away with Judi. While enjoying the Lions, Pistons, Tigers, Red Wings, UNLV football and basketball (yes, he loved his sports), his favorite beverages were Heineken, VSOP Christian Brothers, and Jack n' Coke with lime.
After retiring in 2010, with Judi being a flight attendant, they took many trips checking out cities and weather. Beijing, China, dancing with Judi on the Great Wall; Honolulu, HI, Pearl Harbor; Riverwalk; The Alamo; Alcatraz Island; Virginia Beach; D.C.; MLK Memorial; Vietnam Veterans Memorial; National Mall; and Mardi Gras to name a few. Tired of raking leaves and harsh winters, we had a home built in Henderson, NV in 2012.
Alven made his transition on Thursday, September 26, 2024. He leaves to cherish his memory: devoted and loving wife, Judi; devoted son Alven II; loving daughter, Quichard Toy; sisters Doris, Southfield MI, Joyce, Detroit MI, Phyllis, Nashville TN, Tamika, Charlottesville, VA, and Tonya (Graylon), Shelby Twp MI; brother Monroe (Barbara), Southfield MI; brother-in-law Nate (Barbara), Henderson NV; aunts Luiza Washington, Nashville TN, May Lee (Will), Grand Rapids, MI; 6 nephews, 1 favorite niece; 6 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild; as well as many other family and friends.
For everyone close to his heart, wishing him by calling and talking on Father's day and birthdays. Alven loved you all.
