January 21, 1930 - August 21, 2015
Rey Madueño, 85, of Homeland, California, lived a full life before passing away peacefully on Friday, August 21, 2015. Born in Calexico, California, Rey was the first son of the late Candelario and Marcelina Madueño, hence the nick name "Rey," which means king in Spanish. Rey's given name until 1984 when he changed it legally, was Ines Amalio Madueño. He was named "Ines" because he was born on the saint's day of Saint Ines, a custom native to his parent's homeland of Mexico. He was the seventh of eleven children born to his parents, after which his parents moved to San Diego, California. The Madueño family home became the then beautiful, agricultural hamlet of Chula Vista. Because of Chula Vista's close proximity to the ocean, Rey grew up loving the beach and all it had to offer.
After 40 years of living in the Chula Vista area, Rey relocated to the Seal Beach - Los Alamitos area of Orange County, where he met his soul mate, Jean. They remained near the beach until 2003 when they relocated to the warmer, inland area of the Homeland - Hemet area where he lived out his final years.
Although Rey was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for over twenty years, his true passion was writing. A member of several writing groups, Rey authored many, many short stories and several poems. However, his crowning achievement was his book, "The Gate of the Green Sunset." He loved good music, especially Harry James, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Al Hirt, Herb Alpert, and Carlos Antonio Jobim, and could sing just about any of Frank Sinatra's beautiful songs. A tireless, hardworking, dedicated family man, Rey laughed easily, loved to tell stories, read voraciously, and later in life loved to entertain his grandchildren, and tend his garden. Rey was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
Rey is blessed with the loving legacy of family and friends, and will be missed dearly. He is survived by Jean, his wife of forty years; his five sons, Amalio, Ricardo, Rey David, Adam and stepson, Dan Musetti; his two daughters, Marcelina and Bernadette; two brothers, Candelario and Ildefonso; three sisters Espiridiona (Espy), Alicia and Elvira; nine grandchildren, Charles Daniel, Trevor Rey, Sarah Marie, Adam, Andres, Nicanor, Krissy, Danielle and Tracy; five great-grandchildren, Kaden, Kai Noa, Tosh, James and Isaiah; twenty-five nieces and nephews; as well as many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
A service celebrating Rey's life will be held in the chapel at the Miller-Jones Mortuary, located at 1501 West Florida, Hemet, California 92543, on Saturday, August 29, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent, in the name of Rey Madueño, to The Hope Hospice, 29826 Haun Road, Suite 108, Sun City, California 92586, or to the Salvation Army.
God's Garden
God looked around His garden
And found an empty place.
He then looked down upon the earth
And saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you
And lifted you to rest.
God's garden must be beautiful
He always takes the best.
He saw the road was getting rough
And the hills were hard to climb,
So He closed your weary eyelids
And whispered "Peace be thine."
It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn't go alone,
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.
