Kim Marie Nelson, age 64, passed away peacefully at home on July 27, 2020 after a brave shootout with the evil outlaw known as cancer. She was born in New York on June 5, 1956 and moved with her family to Moreno Valley, California in the 1960s. She attended Moreno Valley High School where she played on the varsity softball team and won awards for raising livestock in Future Farmers of America. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in political science from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and a Master’s degree in public administration from California State University Long Beach.
Kim dedicated her life to public service. She worked for the Riverside and San Bernardino County Departments of Child Support Services for over 30 years. She spent much of her free time volunteering with her local Democratic Party club and various equestrian groups. She volunteered for the City of Moreno Valley Recreational Trails Committee for 22 years, receiving recognition from the City Council for her service and dedication in 2017.
When Kim was not working or helping others, she could be found on horseback. She loved taking her horses camping and going trail riding with her friends. She competed in trail trials and cowboy mounted shooting, and has the awards and scars to prove it. Kim was known by her family and friends for her sense of humor, her generosity, her honesty, and her wisdom, not to mention being the toughest cowgirl west of the Mississippi.
Kim is survived by her husband Robert, her daughter Lindsay, her siblings Nancy, Ronald, Daniel, and John, her nieces and nephews, her dogs Casey, April, Zoey, and Riggs, and her faithful horse Dallas.
Due to COVID-19, the memorial service is limited to immediate family and close friends. The service will be livestreamed on Kim’s Facebook page on Friday, August 14th at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, the Nelson family is requesting donations be made in Kim’s name to Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance.
