i may have been in the first class Mr. Shanahan taught at Haddonfield High School in 1966.  The class was ancient history and I think it met at the beginning of the day. It was probably also my first class in the high school, as I was a freshman.  I remember thinking that he seemed awfully young to be a teacher.  I remember him as having great enthusiasm for teaching and the subject of ancient history.  He was proud of his Irish heritage and joked about lowering our grades if we did not wear green on Saint Patrick's Day. I am quite sure that I was a student in year one of his thirty three year career in Haddonfield.  He was a good teacher that first year and I imagine he only got better as the years passed.  Devoting his life to teaching, he touched many lives and will be fondly remembered by many.  My condolences to his family.

Mr. Shanahan was my junior year history teach and one day I reported to class late.  The reason why was I was giving blood and it took a bit longer.  I walked into class and Mr. Shanahan was upset and he wanted to know why I was late.  I said "Mr. Shanahan, I am not like my brother.  Even though I am late I still came to class."  Mr. Shanahan could not help to to smile.  I informed him that I was giving blood and it took a while for me to fill the bag.  I will never forget Mr. Shanahan.  God bless

I was lucky enough to teach with Joe for 3 years and he provided a wealth of information to a newbie teacher.  In addition, he used to pick me up and drive me to school in the VW as I lived on Windsor Ave.  Didn't have a car that first year as I was saving up for a trip to Europe. He was a special person and his eyes would light up when he talked about his children.

Mr Shanahan was a valued teacher of mine from 1971-1973!  He was a strict yet friendly teacher who guided me into adulthood.  I knew he was a hard worker as he used to tell us he was a part time butcher.  I am now in my 60's and Joe Shanahan was one of those people that I won't ever forget! RIP Mr. Shanahan and you had a life well lived!  You touched a lot of people!
