Gloria was born on May 20, 1930 in Braddyville, Iowa to Dale and Cora (“Faye”) Bast. She and her parents moved to Hemet, California, when she was six years old, during the height of the Great Depression. They traveled throughout California pursuing work, before settling in San Diego for many of her school age years. In 1947, she and her family returned to the Hemet area where her father, Dale, built the family home in Homeland and where she graduated from Perris High School in 1949. She met and married her husband of 47 years, Ken, while working for the new development of Del Webb in Sun City, and she and Ken welcomed their son Daniel in 1965. As Daniel began school, Gloria returned to work as a Teacher’s Assistant working for St. Hyacinth Academy as well as for San Jacinto Elementary School. She loved teaching children and worked for more than twenty years before retiring to care for her mother.
Gloria enjoyed caring for and doing things for others - most importantly for her beloved grandchildren, Jenna and Matthew. In her later years she enjoyed church and Sunday brunch with friends, visiting and assisting her many friends and acquaintances, caring for her orange tree and tomatoes and sending boxes of oranges to family and friends throughout the country each year. And, of course, she enjoyed watching “today’s special value” on QVC and telling everyone she met how great it was!
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, Dale and Faye Bast, and by her husband Ken in 2011. She is survived by her son Daniel and his wife Ann, and by her beloved grandchildren Jenna and Matthew Howell.
