In 1944, he moved to Los Angeles, California where he graduated from Thomas Jefferson High, the class of 1947. While living in Los Angeles, Edgar met the love of his life, Thelma Harmon. Edgar was drafted into the military at the age of 21 in 1950. He proudly served in the Korean War as a Private First Class in the 29th Infantry Regiment as a Bazooka Operator. Upon discharge, he was reunited with Thelma where they were married at the Holy Name Catholic Church on July 18th, 1953. They were married for 63 years. In the union of Edgar and Thelma, they were blessed with four children; Johnny, Michael, Eric, and Jo-Zell.
Edgar took on carpentry as his profession. He joined the union apprenticeship program where he worked for Driver-Eddy Construction and Clark-Porché Construction Company, where he obtained the status of journeyman carpenter and superintendent. In 1967, at the age of 38, he became the proud owner of Porché Liquor, where he remained for 15 years as the sole owner and operator. He sold the business in 1982. Porché Liquor remains in Los Angeles.
During Edgars spare time, he enjoyed building his one-of-a-kind furniture pieces and famous TV trays. He was the families “fix it man” and he never hesitated to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. After retirement, Edgar enjoyed spending time at the local casinos, cheering on his favorite New Orleans sport teams, eating at buffets, and enjoying his favorite dish spaghetti and meatballs, where we lovingly referred to him as Eddie-Spaghetti.
Edgar leaves behind his two sons, Johnny and Eric, a daughter, Jo-Zell, a brother, Antoine Ralph Porché Jr., a sister-in-law, Joyce Smith, nine grandchildren; Jayna, Johnny, Carlos Jr., Melissa, Nicole, Chelsea, Quentin, Grace and Christyanna. As well as 12 great-grandchildren, Jayden, Jonathan, Tessa, Xander, Isabela, Aliyah, Anniston, Jordan, Brantley, Allison, David and Brynnleigh, plus a host of family and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, sisters Cecile and Helen, wife Thelma, son Michael and son-in-law Carlos.
