Thomas Day Myrick, of Benton Louisiana, passed away on January 18th 2023, in Bossier City, at the age of 95. Tom was born on November 16th, 1927 in Monroe Louisiana, to James Samuel and Inez Day Myrick.
During his high school years and shortly after graduation from Bossier High School in 1945, he worked with his father as a Fireman on steam engines on Illinois Central Railroad from Bossier City to Vicksburg Mississippi. In late 1945, he entered the United States Navy. Upon discharge from the Navy in 1947, he attended and graduated from East Texas Baptist College (now university) in 1952.
After college, he worked as a United States Deputy Marshall transporting prisoners as well as a Deputy in the United States Clerk of Courts office, before finding his passion as a Federal Probation Officer where he served for over 20 years and retired as the Chief Probation Officer for the Western District of Louisiana.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; and his daughter, Katheryn Myrick Abington.
Tom is survived by his wife of 74 years, Ada Jeffus Myrick; son, Tom Myrick Jr and wife Carol; and son-in-law, Mike Abington, all of Benton; grandchildren, Sam Myrick and wife Kim of Austin Texas, Charlie Myrick and wife Stacie of Jenks Oklahoma, Nichole Buckle and husband Matt of Shreveport and Elizabeth Abington of Benton; great grandchildren, Ada and David Myrick of Austin, Cameron and Cooper Myrick of Jenks, Annabella Buckle of Shreveport, Charlotte Abington, Isabelle Toms, and Harper Abington-Tunstall, all of Benton; brother, James S. Myrick Jr and wife Mary Myrick of Nashville Tennessee, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Tom and Ada had a love that overcame all the challenges of life during their 74 years of marriage. Their relationship was an example of marriage and love for their two children, four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. During his final few days, he was very disoriented and confused so that he didn’t know anyone coming in and out of his hospital room. On his wife’s final visit, she sat down beside his bed and took his hand. He opened his eyes, and when he saw her, his face lit up. He then said “Hey”, hesitated and said “give me a kiss”, mother leaned over and kissed him, even with his delirium and suffering his love for her conquered his physical condition.
We all feel that our fathers are the best there ever were, that goes without saying, however those of us that called him Daddy, Good Buddy, Paw Paw, or Grand Daddy knew we had the finest. He always loved worried, sacrificed and lived for his family. Every single time a family member experienced the problems of life, the first phone call and hug came from Tom.
Tom and Ada spent their entire lives together attending and serving in several area Presbyterian Churches, the last of which was the First Church of Plain Dealing.
The family would like to thank all those responsible for the loving care that Tom received during his short stay at The Blake at Bossier Assisted Living, and the unbelievable care that he received over his last week at Willis Knighton Bossier. From the moment he entered the Emergency Room and was then moved to the 3rd Floor West, he was treated with love, patience and genuine concern. As each new health problem presented itself, the Doctors and Nurses only worked that much harder. The level of treatment and concern for Tom and our family was a testament to their profession.
Services will be held to celebrate Tom’s life at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home with Minister Diane Brown and Sam Myrick officiating. Interment will follow at Hill Crest Park. Visitation for friends and family will begin at 12:00 p.m. until service time.
Serving as pallbearers will be Charles Coyle, Ray Boggs, David Kelly, Tony Walker, Matt Buckle and Charlie Myrick. Honorary pallbearer will be Glen Brackman.
The family would like to suggest that any contributions you might want to make in Tom’s name be directed to the First Presbyterian Church of Plain Dealing.
