James served in the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1957 and served in the Korean War. He also worked at Power Line Electrical and Bossier Electrical Supply before working as a Maintenance Engineer for the City of Shreveport. After his retirement from the City of Shreveport he enjoyed gardening and traveling with his wife Joye. Upon her passing away in 2009, he moved back to the Shreveport/Bossier area. He was living at the Bloom At Bossier in his final years and made many friends and enjoy living there.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Joye Rutherford, sons Tony and Chris Rutherford; brothers Lee and Marion Rutherford; sisters Judy Tyler, Merlyn Smith, and Edith Youngblood.
He survived by his daughters Ebba Russell, and her husband Frank of Bossier City, LA; Penny LaFlame and her husband Shawn of Newport News, VA; and son Allen Rutherford, and his wife Robin of Elk Creek, MO; and one sister Effie Floyd of Columbia, LA. James also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the UCI Unit in Willis-Knighton Pierremont for taking good care of James. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to the American Cancer Society.
A visitation for James will be held Tuesday, November 7, 2023 from 10:00 AM until time for the Celebration of Jim's Life at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home, 601 Hwy 80, Haughton, Louisiana 71037. Interment will immediately follow on the grounds of Hill Crest Memorial Park, Haughton, Louisiana 71037. All friends and family are welcome.
