Our beloved mother, Carolyn Vanderslice Lane Hebert, age 90, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love on Wednesday, September 11,2024. She was born on March 14, 1934 in Texarkana, Arkansas to C.W. and Ethel Vanderslice. She was the fifth of eight children and had a wonderful childhood, full of love and laughter and sweet memories that lasted a lifetime.
She met our father, Thomas A. Lane, Sr., as a teenager working at the drive-in movie theater in Texarkana. They were married in May of 1951 and spent 59 years together before his passing in 2010. Mom began her married life as a young Air Force bride far from home in Cheyenne, Wyoming. While stationed there, they welcomed their first child, Anita. After Dad’s military service they spent a number of years in El Reno, Oklahoma. There the family grew to include Nelda and Thomas, Jr. Our family then spent the next 38 years in Bossier City. There were so many good times with Mom helping with Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at Waller Baptist Church. And she had some fun too! There were Bowling leagues and weekly card games with the ladies in the neighborhood. When the children were grown, they moved to Benton and loved it. Cypress Baptist Church became their home away from home. Mom delighted in the company of her weekly Bridge Group.
Mom had a lengthy career in the retail industry beginning at Rubenstein’s Department Store as a sales clerk and promoting to manager over the years. During this time, she also pursued a college degree going to night classes for 11 years while working full time. But she made it and was so proud of her Bachelors Degree! We were all proud of her too. Later, to the delight of her grandchildren, she managed a Toy Fair location.
Mom married Dr. James O. “Jimmy” Hebert, Jr. in 2016 and they enjoyed each other’s love and companionship for eight years. Time was spent in church, travel and enjoying their beloved pets Precious and Sonny and later Marcy and Buddy.
Our mother loved and was loved by so many. She is proceeded in death by her parents, our father, her brothers C.W. Vanderslice, Jr., Akin Vanderslice, Kenneth Vanderslice and Jerome “Mac” Vanderslice, as well as her sister, Ruth Baber.
She is survived by her husband, Jimmy Hebert, daughters Anita Tullier (George), Nelda Altimus (Bill), and her son Tom Lane (Diane). Grandchildren Mark Tullier (Carri), Matthew Altimus (Ashley), Benjamin Tullier (Christina), Joshua Altimus (Ember), Eric Pulsifer (Lisa), Elizabeth Altimus and Patrick Lane. Great Grandchildren, Mackenzie, William, Carter, Mason, Catherine, Ava, Luka, Beatrice, Leo, Savannah, Arlo and Ethan. She is also survived by sisters, Jeannette Phillips and Joyce Mitchell, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Mom felt blessed to have Jimmy’s children in her life and loved them sincerely. Cherilyn Wade (John), John Hebert (GiGi), Mark Hebert (Jeanette) and daughter in law, Jeanne Hebert. Their children, Layton Hebert, Chris Wade, Lauren Stephens (Andrew), Amelia Hebert, Matthew Hebert, Ian Hebert, Anne Marie Hebert and Elise Hebert, as well as one great grandchild, Liam Stephens.
All of our family would like to express our gratitude to those who have helped care for Mom during her health struggles, the staff at Old Brownlee Community Care and especially Ethel, the staff at Cypress Point Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and dear Quinton, Mary and Alden, Mary Louise who cared for her at home for many months and St. Joseph’s Hospice. We send our eternal love and appreciation to Michelle Carlson for being with Mom 24 hours a day to allow her to spend her final months at home.
Mom was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. We were all blessed to have her in our lives.
Services will be held Saturday, September 14, 2024 beginning at 10am at Cypress Baptist Church. Visitation will be held prior to services Saturday from 9am until 10am. Internment will immediately follow services at Hill Crest Memorial Park.
