BOSSIER CITY, LOUISIANA - Alvin Samuel Carney (Chief Master Sergeant, Retired - United States Air Force), 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 7, 2021.
Alvin was born on December 30, 1930, in Independence, Louisiana, to Alvin Carney and Carrie Serena (Gates) Carney. He graduated from Independence High School in Independence, Louisiana, in 1948, and completed some college courses. He served his country proudly in the United States Air Force for thirty years. He retired from military service at the rank of CMSgt at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, in 1979. He attended Pine Grove Baptist Church in Blanchard, Louisiana.
Alvin is preceded in death by his wife, Edna Ruth “Peggy” (Kendrick) Carney of Bossier City, Louisiana; his parents Alvin Carney and Carrie Serena (Gates) Carney of Independence, Louisiana; his son Jackie Roy Carney of Palmer, Alaska; and brother Calvin Nueman Carney of DeQuincy, Louisiana.
Left to cherish his memory, his survivors include: his wife Doris Wascom Carney of Bossier City, Louisiana; his son Daniel B. Carney and wife Jennifer Lea of Baker, Florida; his daughters Terry Lea (Carney) Rose and husband Bruce, and Jerry Lea Carney - all of Haughton, Louisiana; his stepdaughter Sharon Collins and boyfriend Jim Burian of Shreveport, Louisiana; his stepson Darrell Collins of Orlando, Florida; his daughter-in-law Charlene Carney of Palmer, Alaska; his sister Barbara Jane McAlister of Independence, Louisiana; granddaughters Kelley Vetkoetter and husband Michael of Bossier City, Louisiana; Ashley Rose of Mukwonago, Wisconsin; Nicole (Niqui) Shocklee and husband Jeff of Fairbanks, Alaska; Jackie Sexton and husband Wayne of Palmer, Alaska, and Angela Kendrick & husband Daniel Wilkins of Palmer, Alaska; grandsons Jimmie Van Etten, Eddie Van Etten, and Bruce Couch; great grandchildren Hunter Henderson; Harley Vetkoetter; Salem Rose; Nicole Mallula and husband William (Billy); Jacob Shocklee; Shaylee Shocklee; Aurora Sexton; Aydin Kendrick; and Daniel Wilkins, Jr.; and numerous nieces and nephews. “Adopted” family members include: Henry and Glenna Parker of San Marcos, California; Glenda Larson of Buchanan, Georgia; Patricia (Patty) Townsend of Haughton, Louisiana; and John Rougeau of Boyce, Louisiana.
During his military career, Alvin served in the Vietnam and Korean Wars and achieved the following awards: Bronze Star Medal; Meritorious Service Medal; Air Force Commendation Medal; Presidential Unit Citation/Air Force With 1 OLC; Air Force Outstanding Unit Award With V and 2 OLC; Air Force Good Conduct Medal With 1 Silver OLC; Army Good Conduct Medal With 2 Bronze Loops; National Defense Service Medal With 1 Bronze Star; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Vietnam Service Medal With 2 Bronze Stars; Air Force Longevity Service Award With Silver OLC; Expert Marksman - Air Force; Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross With Palm; and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Alvin was also a Member of the NORAD Battle Staff.
Alvin’s hobbies included: family barbeques; hunting and fishing; gardening; playing the guitar and singing; playing cards (Rummy and Hearts; especially “passing” the Queen of Hearts); board games (Monopoly, Chinese Checkers, and Scrabble...He enjoyed “challenging” your words in Scrabble); coaching and/or supporting his sons’ and daughters’ sports teams (football, baseball, volleyball, basketball, and softball); an avid LSU Tigers fan as well as watching men’s and women’s college sports and olympic events on television; traveling; photography; and reading.
Alvin’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude for the special care given to him by the staffs of the Bloom at Bossier and Colonial Oaks Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation -- both in Bossier City, Louisiana, and the hospital staffs of Willis-Knighton Pierremont and Willis-Knighton Medical Center -- both in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at 1:00 PM followed by the funeral service at 2:00 PM in the chapel at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home located at 601 Hwy 80, Haughton, Louisiana, 71037. The graveside service with military honors will follow the funeral service. Officiating the funeral service will be Dr. Randy Harper, Pastor of Bellaire Baptist Church in Bossier City, Louisiana. Pallbearers will be: Bruce Rose, Michael Vetkoetter, Steven McNeill, Carl McAlister, John Rougeau, and Buster Page.
