During her teen years, she held the title of Miss Elkton.
She is survived by a brother Ditman (late Joyce) and dear sister Francis (Tommy). She is also survived by one sister in law, Brenda Gilley Scott (late Fred.) She loved being an aunt to nine nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her brother Lynn (late Nancy).
While she was attending Sullins Methodist College, she met the Virginia Tech football star, late Robert “Doc” Gilley at a dance. He was her favorite dance partner. The pair were married in 1953 and happily danced their way through life. They were avid Virginia Tech Football fans.
In the 60s, the couple relocated to Wilmington, NC where they raised two sons, Jeff Gilley and late Chet Gilley (Tina). She was blessed with five grandchildren, Nash, Sara, Cole, Lexi and Dalton (Sarrah). Recently she proudly became a great grandmother to Micah and Adrianna.
Sara never met a stranger. She took great pleasure in her successful career at Finks jewelry. She loved jewelry and especially helping couples pick out their diamonds.
She was always there with a smile on her face and a “Hey honey!” for everyone.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2024 at 10:00 am at the Elkton United Methodist Church, 205 Warren Street, Elkton, Virginia.
