He was preceded in death by his wives, Betty Mae (Cronhister) and Violet (Martin) Zimmerman.
Surviving are two daughters Janell Salter and Joylene Tucker; two step-daughters Patty Baughman and Glenda Naylor; 9 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Phares was a retired employee from Central Dauphin School District (Paxtonia); and a US Army veteran of WW II, where he served as a staff sergeant with the 924th Field Artillery Battalion, and he fought at the Battle of the Bulge.
He was a life member of VFW Post 1718, PA Sports Hall of Fame, Disabled American Veterans, and an honorary life member PA Congress of Parents and Teachers Association. He was a member of the American Legion Post 730, Penbrook Fire Company, Hershey Bears Booster Club, and a charter member of the Progress Fire Co.
Phares was the oldest season ticket holder for the Hershey Bear games; he lived for attending Bear games, watching NASCAR and dirt track racing and was a big fan of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Funeral Service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, November 20, 2014 in the Neill Funeral Home, 3501 Derry St., Harrisburg. Burial will be in East Harrisburg Cemetery, with full military honors. A viewing will be held 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, November 19, 2014 and 10:00 AM Thursday until the time of service at the funeral home.
