Herbert M. Smith, Jr., age 94, of Mechanicsburg, PA, passed away on January 13, 2019, at The Gardens Nursing Home in Camp Hill. Born August 8, 1924, in Red Lion, son of Herbert M. Smith, Sr. and Flossie I. (Miller) Smith.
He was a graduate of college and taught Art at a high school level shortly afterwards. From there he used his love of art and photography to pursue various interests which shaped his career. He owned a photography studio in Hamburg, NJ, and then later used his talents as a commercial artist for Reed Standard in York, PA, as well as Konevitch Sign Co. and Cameo Sign Co. in the 1970’s. He was also a photographer of weddings and glamour portraits at this time. At the age of 57, he purchased Moffit’s Furniture Shop and transformed it into Moffit Smith, a successful furniture restoration business.
Herb was a member of the Art Association of PA and the Mechanicsburg Art Club. He remained active with his painting and photography after retirement and displayed his art at several galleries, most recently at the 2nd Floor Gallery in Mechanicsburg. He continued to paint up until the last months of his life.
Surviving are his wife, Cheryl Smith; 3 sons, Mark (Karen) Smith Stafford, VA, Paul (Susan) Smith and William (Eileen) Smith of Mechanicsburg; a daughter, Kim (John) Cook of Hudson, NH; 7 grandchildren, Michele (Ben) Tritt, Mark (Nancy) Smith, Jason (Katherine) Cook, James (Corinne) Cook, Dustin Smith, Zachary Smith and Ethan Smith; and 9 great-grandchildren, Jacob (Perri) Tritt, Samantha Tritt, Eli Tritt, Gus smith, Maxwell Smith, Grace Smith, Camron Cook, Kaylin Cook and Ayla Cook.
He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Smith.
There will be a Memorial Service in the Spring.
