H. James Steckbeck, 84, of Mechanicsburg, passed away Saturday, March 7, 2020, at Bethany Village. Born January 16, 1936, in Harrisburg, he was a son of the late Henry John and Anna Mae (Ellinger) Steckbeck.
James graduated West Shore H.S., Class of 1953 and attended college. When he was a child, he loved spending summer vacations on the Ellinger Family Farm with all his cousins. He married his high school sweetheart, Grace Ann, in 1955.
He worked several years at West Shore Hardware before beginning his life-long career at United Gilsonite Laboratories. At UGL, he rose to an Executive Salesman, achieving top sales honors for several years. Together with Grace Ann, they raised their 4 children in Perry County before returning to the West Shore.
James was a member of Shepherdstown United Methodist Church. He was an avid hunter and loved bowling, golfing, and woodworking.
In addition to his wife of 64 years, he is survived by daughter, Joan; son, Richard (Sandra); grandchildren, Jacob, Chandler Grace, Matthew, and Andrew; brother-in-law, Dr. H. Robert Gasull (Pat); 4 great-grandchildren; 6 nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, hunter.
He was also preceded in death by his son, Thomas; and daughter, Vicki Bello.
Services will be Saturday, March 21, 2020, 11AM at Shepherdstown U.M.C., 1934 S York St, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. Visitation will be from 10AM – 11AM at the church.
