George E. Caldwell, former executive director of the Harrisburg Boys and Girls Club, passes away at 78. George Edward Caldwell was born to Iva Jane Allen on Dec. 11, 1943 in Mechanicsburg, PA. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on March 12. George is survived by his wife of 55 years, Judy (Kline) Caldwell; two daughters, Dawn Barbush (Sam Jr) of Etters and Dori Osborn of Harrisburg; two grandchildren, Joshua Jacobs (Tanner Burke) of Oakland, CA and Alexa Barbush-Stasyszyn (Jordan) of Carlisle; brothers, William Caldwell (Linda) of GA and Richard Caldwell of Duncannon; sister, Sue Smith (Terry) of Harrisburg; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his mother, Iva Jane Allen and stepdad, John Mumma. George's work was his passion. He started working at the Boys and Girls Club at the age of twelve, lining the bases for their baseball field, working in the game room and woodshop, and eventually becoming the executive director for all the clubs in the area. George was a master craftsman, working part time for Ed Lank, remodeling kitchens and many family homes. Being a true outdoorsman, he loved spending time at his cabin; along with his family and friends, hunting, fishing, and playing cards. George was a member of the Harrisburg Rotary Club and worked closely with the United Way and the Harrisburg Food Bank. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, March 21, 2022, in the Neill Funeral Home, 3501 Derry Street, Harrisburg. A viewing will be held from 10:00 am, until the time of service, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Harrisburg Boys and Girls Club, 1227 Berryhill St, Harrisburg, PA 17104, or to Amedysis Hospice, 3350 Paxton St., Suite 5, Harrisburg, PA 17111. The family is asking for everyone to wear a mask.
