Obituary of Susan Barney
Susan “Sue” Shoen Barney, 61, of Hampton, VA, died December 19th, 2022, at home surrounded by her loving family. Known to her community as Miss Sue or Momma Barney, Sue was a welcoming, compassionate person always ready to help out, lend a hand, or chit chat for hours. Sue was the daughter of proud parents Roy and Barbara Shoen of Norfolk, NY where she grew up. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the Moose Lodge, and volunteered for Navy Relief. Sue wore many hats in her early career from secretary at Langley Air Force Base (‘85-‘96) to a consultant for products like Creative Memories, Avon, Tupperware, Tri Chem, and Pampered Chef, but she’s mostly known and loved for her time as the owner and backbone of Barney’s Auto Repair in Hampton, VA with her husband Kevin, serving the community since 1996. Customers and friends always appreciated her friendly face and voice over the phone as she went above and beyond to run the numbers, schedules, and operations to get everyone safe and sound back in the driver’s seat. The Barney family thanks the people of Hampton and all around for their business and support over the years; even though it won’t be the same without fearless leader, Sue, Barney’s Auto will stay in the family and be run by Kevin and Sue’s sons Curt and Cory. Sue is survived by her husband Kevin, two sons and daughters in law Curtis (Lorie) and Cory (Kylene), siblings Jeff (Sheri) and Yvonne (Sam), beautiful granddaughters Kaylah, Brittany, Faith, and Jojo, one adored great-grandson, Kayden, mother-in-law Fran, sisters in law Maureen, Micki, and Susan, brother-in-law Steve (Megan), many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, honorary son Trent Lloyd, special friends Becky Thompson and Marge Hutt, grandcats June and Priscilla and the unforgettable “Shop Kitty.” Sue loved her trips to New York each summer for the Shoen family reunions and many travels and get togethers with the Barney family as well. Family and friends were everything to Sue, and she will be forever missed and remembered. When Kevin and Sue were stationed in Scotland, they took the boys to the Edinburgh Zoo where Sue was absolutely taken aback by the penguins. She bought a small ceramic penguin which started a lifelong collection of penguin figures, decorations, and memorabilia. Friends and family have showered her with penguin gifts since. Sue’s wish for her children, grandchildren, and anyone who wants to join in is thinking of her and smiling when they come across penguins to share in the joy they brought her. The Barney family would like to thank the customers and friends of Barney’s Auto Repair, the wonderful people of the Kindred Hospice Care Team, and all their family and friends. In lieu of flowers, family and friends can donate to The Cat Corner, Kindred Hospice Team or a charity of their choice. A memorial service for Susan will be held Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Avenue, Hampton, Virginia. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.parklawn-woodfh.com for the Barney family.
