Richard W. O'Neil, Sr., 82, passed away on Wednesday, February 16, 2011. He was a native of Yorktown, VA and a resident of Gloucester for 23 years. Richard was employed with the CSX Railroad as a brakeman and conductor and retired in April 1988 after 30 years of service. He served honorably in the U.S. Army and earned a Good Conduct Medal and Occupational Medal (Germany). He also was a member of the Transportation Lodge No.337, A.F.& A.M., Newport News.
Richard is preceded in rest by his parents, Harry and Olivia O'Neil; brothers, Harry H. and Robert J. O'Neil; and sisters, Ethel M. Thomas and Maragret N. O'Neil. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Anna O'Neil; sons, Richard "Walter" O'Neil, Jr., William O'Neil and Wayne Gilbert; daughters, Phyllis O'Neil and Olivia Handle; grandchildren, Jarad White and Kristina Handle; brother, Thomas E. O'Neil; and sisters, Rebecca A. Kanaday and Mary L. Kounse.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, Feb. 20 from 3 to 5:00 p.m. at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A celebration of Richard's life will be held Monday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, officiated by Rev. Larry Jones. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.
