It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Phillip W. Finch, 81, of Yorktown, Virginia, who left this world and entered into Heaven on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. Surrounded by his wife of 60 years, Diana, and only daughter, Jennifer Stook (NC), and friends in his final moments on earth, he remained a man of integrity, compassion, and wisdom, who will also be remembered for his great sense of humor and knowledge of tax laws, as well as his deep love for the Lord.
Phil was a graduate of Warwick High School and University of Richmond - Robins School of Business (1964) with a BS in business administration, accounting and business/ management. While in college in 1962, he accepted a job with KPMG in Richmond that allowed him the privilege of going to Melbourne, Australia, to work for a few years! Becoming a CPA in the 60s, was one of his greatest accomplishments.
In January, 1966, Phil served in the US Army in the Vietnam War as a 1st Lieutenant. He was awarded a Bronze Star in October, 1968. At the end of his life, he was a 100% disabled American vet who suffered greatly from the effects of Agent Orange.
During his career in accounting, he worked at several firms until opening his own practices, He worked at Coopers and Lybrand as an audit manager, at Newport News Savings and Loans as a Sr VP Treasurer, and was a VP of Finance at Forrest Coile Associates. In 1985, he became the managing director for Financial Directions, Inc., which is still in business today. In 2005, he partnered with Dennis Bailey to form Bailey & Finch, PLC in Yorktown, VA, where they took care of many wonderful clients’ financial needs. In 2007, Colonial Financial Partners, LTD., Yorktown, was created where Phil was the President.
Phil was the “Go To” man with any tax questions, even serving as an expert tax witness for court cases after his retirement. Phil was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Hampton, VA, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, a deacon, as well as served on financial committees during his life. He served as the Treasurer of the Peninsula Baptist Association for over 20 years.
Phil loved baseball, basketball, and the University of Richmond Spiders. He also loved animals especially his backyard birds. He always enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Phil is survived by his wife, Diana, daughter, Jennifer Stook (NC), granddaughter, Brittany Gunst (Bryan) and the cutest great grandsons, Bryson and Jordan, and his sister, Phyllis St. John (TX). He will be deeply missed by us, but we rest in the assurance we will be with him one day.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Peninsula Rescue Mission in Newport News helping those experiencing homelessness and poverty or donate in his honor to the charity of your choice.
