Born on August 19, 1954, in Salem, Virginia, John was the cherished son of Dewey Browder and Hazel Beamer Browder. A proud graduate of Andrew Lewis High School, class of 1971, he went on to complete the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprenticeship Program.
John dedicated 49 years to Newport News Shipbuilding, where he worked as a Pipe Fitter, Radiological Auditor, and finally as a Mixed Waste Instructor. He retired in December 2023 as a Master Shipbuilder, a testament to his commitment and expertise.
John’s greatest joy was creating memories with his beloved friends and family. He had a deep appreciation for a wide range of music and movies, which he loved to discuss. Traveling was a passion he indulged in whenever possible. A lifelong fan of Virginia Tech football, John remained a passionate Hokie throughout his life.
Known for his compassionate soul and infectious smile, John was a kind and caring person who left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
John is survived by his life companion, Carolyn Strayer; his son, Ryan Browder, and wife Ashley; and his granddaughter, Audrey. He also leaves behind his brothers, Richard Browder and Joseph Browder, and their families; honorary son, Kenneth Strayer Jr.; honorary daughter, Jill Murray, her husband Alex, and grandchildren, Juliana, Kinsley, and William.
John will be dearly missed by many lifelong friends who meant the world to him.
Visitation will be held on October 15, 2024, from 5-8 pm at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life service will take place on October 16, 2024, at 11 am at Catalyst Church in Newport News, VA, with Pastor Daniel Tripp officiating.
