Preceding in death were his wife, Anthonett E. Davis; parents, Edward and Louise Davis; siblings, Edward Jr., Beatrice, Larry, Michael and Louis Davis, and nephew Nathaniel Davis.
James was born on July 27, 1944 in Newport News, VA. He was the 5th of 17 children born to his parents, Edward Sr. and Louise Williams.
James received formal education through the Newport News Public School System. During his high school years, James was a star varsity basketball player at Huntington High School. After graduating in 1963, James was briefly employed at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company before being drafted to the United States Army in April 1967.
Following his miliary service, James relocated to Washington, DC where he worked at Georgetown University Hospital for approximately 25 years. After he retired from Georgetown Hospital, he returned home to Newport News, VA. James continued to stay busy with a second career working at Dollar General Corporation.
James was known to be cool and smooth. His demeanor was so endearing that he never met a stranger. When he returned home from DC, he rekindled old friendships and embraced new ones which was his joy. He was usually soft spoken, you would often have to lean in to hear what he was saying; however, if he raised his voice, you better watch out. In later years, James still fancied himself as a star baller and in his mind, no one could beat him. He also loved music and dancing. We will truly miss him.
To celebrate James’ memory are his children Catrina, James (Monelle), Kelly (John); grandchildren Anthony, Miracle, Jakayla, Jakaiya, Jayce, Gia, Leah, Madison, and Darion; sisters Mary L. Hill, Martha (Tony) Peterson, Newport News, VA. and Brenda G. Davis, Hampton, VA.; brothers Wendon (Sylvia) Davis, Culver City, CA., William Davis, Charlottesville, VA., Leroy Davis, Mesa, AZ., Howard (Faye) Davis, Providence, RI., Melvin (Lisa) Davis, Alexandria, VA., Christopher Davis, Bowie, MD., and Dwayne (Alvita) Davis, Hampton, VA., and his many nieces, nephews, and friends.
