He was born November 11, 1948 in Newport News, but called Hampton his home for the last 30 years.
Charles was a proud Marine and earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Presidential Unit Citation, Purple Heart Medal and Good Conduct Medal. His military career spanned over 15 years and he loved serving his country. He carried the values he learned there into the rest of his life.
After the Marines, Charles drove an 18-wheeler up and down the East Coast. You could always spot his rig because it was the cleanest and shiniest one around. A member of Faith Church of God in Hampton, Charles served in various roles. He was a deacon and greeter and he also helped with the finances. Charles was a stoic and tough man with a thick mustache, but ask him about his grandson and he turned into a big teddy bear; breaking out his phone to show the latest pictures. He adored his family and especially loved going to the races in Richmond together. Charles never met a stranger and could talk to anyone about anything.
Charles is preceded in rest by his mother, Josephine Whitsett and his father, Charles Wilson. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Belinda Wilson; son, Jeff Wilson of Greenville, SC; stepsons, Chris Saunders (Stephanie) of MD, Eric Saunders of NY; grandson, Parker Saunders of MD; sisters, Kathy Ward (Percy) of Poquoson, Carole Donovan of Hampton; nieces, Mary Jones of Hampton, and Dorrie Stump (Brian) of Newport News; great-niece, Melissa Jones of Hampton; and numerous extended family and friends.
The family will receive friends at 1:00 PM on Friday, June 18, 2021 at Faith Church of God, 1115 Todds Lane, Hampton, VA 23666. A Celebration of Life will follow at 2:00 PM with interment at Parklawn Memorial Park.
