I met Lucas while backpacking through Australia around 2012.  We ended up on a boat with him in the middle of the ocean and the rest was history. For the next week, we scootered around to waterfalls, rivers and beaches enjoying each other's company. I always called him Peter Pan because of his carefree, easy-going and joyous energy. He was a magnet to me. 

Although our time together was short, over the following years I thought of him often. Today, he stumbled into my mind once again...

I am profoundly heartbroken to hear of Lucas' passing.  Sending love and strength to his family and loved ones.

 I met Lucas after he had emailed me almost 10 years ago to buy clothing from a clothing brand I had at the time. He bought painted galaxy leggings and a sweater for a friend. He was so enthusiastic about it all! I remember the conversation we had during this exchange an incredibly positive one, and he ordered another shirt a while later and made some buttons for my clothing brand too! Every time was a long, friendly chat and catch up. 

To this day I somehow feel like I kept in touch with him all these years, as I, like everyone else would keep up to date and remain inspired by his adventures.  A friendly comment or story reply, and he was always helpful when I messaged him for any outdoor hiking advice. 

His kind character clearly even made such an impact on an acquaintance like me, so I can only imagine how he touched the lives of his loved ones.  I will be thinking of you Lucas, I thank you for your warmth here on earth and will look for you in the stars.

Dear Ulbinas Family,

I can’t imagine the pain that you must be going through and I am so sorry for your loss. I have been Lucas’s friend since high school, and we worked together at Kiwanis. Lucas has been a role model for me since we were young. In high school I felt very insecure. People could be very confrontational and rude, and this had a detrimental impact on my actions and on how I viewed my social surroundings. Lucas was different. He always treated me with kindness and respect, and this changed my perspective entirely. He always made me feel included and that really helped to build my self-esteem. I appreciated his friendship very much and we had some amazing times together. He had such amazing energy and so many friends. We have all been very supportive of one another through this tragedy and I think that he would be very happy about that. I am so proud of him and the positive impact that he had on all of the lives of his friends. He inspired others to act altruistically.  He brought people from all walks of life together in celebration. I will never forget the lessons that I have learned by Lucas’ example and I will always strive to emulate his kindness and compassion, and his love for his friends for the rest of my life.

It’s been a month since you’ve passed and it still feels surreal. Growing up my dad always said “when it’s your time it’s your time”. But over the recent years when I hear of young people passing I find myself asking “how is this part of god’s plan? They haven’t lived long enough to fulfil their purpose in life.” At the funeral, I found the priest’s sermon about one’s pilgrimage to be quite fitting.  After reading every single amazing memories of love, laughter, friendships, relationships, physical/emotional support, nature, art, life milestones, activities & events that people have shared of you Lucas... it is evident that although your pilgrimage wasn’t as long as some of ours will be, you fulfilled your purpose in your short 28 years here on earth. And to know and somewhat understand that gives me some comfort.
When I look back in my memories of us, the one that always comes to mind is that long incessant   wave we would give each other at the end of the night when I’d go home after hanging out with Todd. We would just wave for minutes until it got awkward. When Todd left town for those 6 years we’d only catch up during family functions. I love how we’d always glance at each other and just shrug whenever something happened. It was our way of thinking the same thing without saying it out loud. But that’s what   our relationship was always like - comfortably quiet around each other. It wasn’t until Nola & Adeline came along and your involvement in their lives that I really saw your love. From bike/boat/toboggan rides, to beach days/lake swims/surfboarding/fishing, to backyard & clear lake camping, to birthdays/baptisms/pancake Tuesdays/thanksgivings/pumpkin carving & Halloween visits at Mociute’s/Christmas, France escapade, movie nights, summertime fires, outdoor hotdog & marshmallows roasts, summer dinner on the back deck, park adventures, reptile zoo date, wrestling &  pillow fights... for all of it, thank you. We will hold on to the afterglow, love you.

I had the pleasure of working alongside Lucas for my first ever job at the Hamilton East Kiwanis Boys & Girls Club. He was always one of the most easygoing and outgoing guards who always helped those around him try to succeed. Though we drifted apart after I left Kiwanis, I still reflect back on the good times I had there and a lot of those times include Lucas. In the short 4 yours I knew and worked with him, he was always joking around and having fun; a great presence to be around. I remember some of the first work parties I ever went to when he would host for the guards and how he would always make sure everyone was okay and looked after while we were having our fun. 
My condolences go out to your family. Thank you for the good memories, rest easy Lucas. 

I met Lucas when I was introduced to the game of waterpolo. Lucas was kind and funny and was always willing to help teach a new player. I’ll never forget the memories we made, and the friend I gained.

My memories of Lucas start from a young age, just shortly after his birth. As Todd's friend, the Ulbinases always treated me like family, and those values were natural to Lucas.
 Growing up, Lucas had great role models to look up to. As he got older, he was the one we could then look up to as a role model. It was amazing to see his tight bond with Todd; it was something special. They were so close, Todd chipped his tooth on him.
Looking back, remembering the treehouse days, I knew Lucas would always be an adventurer. When I think of my bucket list, it looks something like Lucas' Instagram page. Knowing the many things Lucas has experienced helps get me through the hardship. He was all in, and I admire his character for that.
I know his family had a special place in his heart. As they do mine.

From The Coronation Games to Beanie Babies and garage sales, holographic pokémon card mishaps and "No Girls Allowed" in the treehouse, to making forts in both living rooms and in the snow,  to his Tin Man costume slowing him down while trick or treating and later connecting as young adults swapping travel stories, to the odd shenanigans in high school, and then later in Ottawa (including flying a plane) and Whistler - I am reminded of  how lucky I am to have known Lucas and shared time with such a special person.

Among many of those formative memories I have of Lucas, the trip to Burning Man (otherwise known as "that concert in California" we coined it for the sake of my grandparents) was magical. I feel so privileged to have shared these moments with him, Sandy, and Laura out there in the desert.

One of my most recent memories of him included a few of us dancing like ballerinas around my living room laughing incessantly. Most of my memories of him involve a lot of laughter and goofing around. He will be truly missed and I will keep these memories of him close to me always. Thinking of you all during this time and sending lots of love.

I had the great privilege of photographing the Ulbinas family when  Todd and Gielyn were married. Amongst them, there are captured moments in time of Lucas, with family; happy and proud, they are unforgettable.

I am grateful to have known Lucas, to call him friend. I cherish the time we shared and the unforgettable warmth of his bright smile. Those moments I will always carry with me.

We are so very saddened to hear of Lucas' passing. Andrew and I knew Lucas through Todd, who taught Andrew how to fly back in 2012.  Back in 2014, Todd and Lucas came to Ottawa and we decided we'd go to Mont Tremblant to ski for the day. I remember the day very clearly, as we picked up Todd and Lucas in a snowstorm. I remember really enjoying our chat on the drive down, as we talked about our shared love of music, hiking and camping.  Lucas spent most of his time that day on the Black Diamond hills and it showed, because on the drive home him and Todd passed out. We didn't see Lucas again until Todd and Gielyn's wedding but he remembered us and came over to chat right away. We had only met Lucas a handful of times, but we knew he was an incredibly rare and beautiful soul, one that will live on forever. Sending all of our love and support to your family.

Where do I even begin...grade school, high school, collage, distance, time apart, true friendship is what you gave all of us. It's not fair to describe how it feels. To see you all around are old neighborhood, laughing at all the good times we had. Walking home from grade school planning out French project to going to high school tougher and causing a bunch of ruckus everywhere we went. Riding the bus for an adventure, going from one end of the city to another. That walk home in the pouring rain signing our lungs out and jumping in puddles. My sister making us late every day for school. Getting suspended for me pretending to be your mom because we wanted to skip school.. (Sorry Penny and Lue) . How could I forget the festival of friends<3 you were always there for me, to be the friend i needed. The walks home from school on a hot day bc the bus was full and it was a nice day out, the endless convos, secrets, laughs and stories we had, even then you love the outdoors. Us always going down the valley to hang, the parties in the tree house, the pool parties. I could go on forever. I'm so thankful I have a life time worth of memories to love and cherish. And now recently popping up in my life about once or twice a year with the best hugs and the biggest smile and a new story for me. It sucks I'll never get the chance to take you up on the offer to check out your new place, but everywhere new I go ill think of you. Far well my friend until we meet again safe travels on your way through the universe. I'll miss you<3

Lucas and I were not close, but the few interactions we had over the past couple years made me realize he was someone I wanted to know better. 

As kids playing water polo, I remember Lucas being goofy and kind hearted. We had fallen out of touch, and after a decade, Lucas reached out to reconnect a couple years ago. He shared freely, intentionally, and engaged with such genuine interest. Out of the blue, he would reach out about things that reminded him of you, like a mushroom ecology workshop. Unfortunately I could not make it, but I remember admiring his courage to randomly connect with someone he had not seen in years.

This past fall, I started learning how to juggle. After posting videos on social media showing much failure and some success, Lucas reached out with such kind words of encouragement. He shared inspirational videos and offered advice from his own experience.  To him, juggling was a mental break “to focus on something that is an extension of you,” and pure fun, an opportunity to goof around and dance with local entertainers at festivals. Lucas reached out to share how my juggling was an inspiration to him to start exercising the mind in unconventional ways again. Little did he know, his messages helped inspire me to keep going. 

Lucas also publicly shared his deep love of the Bruce Trail, and inspired my goal to one day complete the whole thing end-to-end. Looking forward to a walk this weekend in memory of him. This world has really lost a gem. Sending deep condolences to Lucas’s family and everyone who loved him.

My condolences and sympathy to the Ulbinas family, and those who cherished him. I became friends with Lucas during elementary school and had the privilege of attending highschool with him as well. Lucas was one of the most selfless people I’ve ever met. He would give without receiving, help anyone where he could, and acted as a bridge between many different people. The number of lives he touched and friendships he helped forge are too numerous to count. I admired his love of adventure and nature, knack for problem-solving, and most of all his incredible impact on our community. Lucas had a natural way of making people feel warm and accepted and encouraged us all, even now, to be better people. He truly was a Jack of all trades, and a master of bringing people together. Lucas will forever be remembered as a dear friend, adventurer, and cornerstone of our community. A radiant soul gone too soon 




Oh we've had our ups a downs you were never one to give up on someone. Honestly I don't know which memory to talk about I have so many with you and each one is held so dear to my heart. 
You could alway make me smile even when I didn't want to. The last few years we didn't keep in touch but I always loved seeing all the amazing place you went. 

When we were on the swim team I always wanted to be as good as you. You were so fast! But at one particular meet there was an obnoxious team who had this huge banner and were driving us nuts. So we planned our very own Italian Job (remember that movie. We called it that because of the mini cooper) I remember running away yelling eat my bubbles! Then we went back to celebrate our victory Micheal Phelps stlye in the tree house. Wonder what ever happened to that banner. Any ways just keep swimming ❤️

We have never met but perhaps one day we will.  Lucas came to work for us as we like you, were recovering from the loss of a loved one.  Lucas knew his role from the very first day he started  which was  to fill some big shoes and help us move forward. He brought light to us to help us thru some of our darkest days. We will be forever grateful!

My sincerest condolences to Lucas' family 

Lucas was such a light. Anyone who knew him, knew how special he was. He was a friend to all, and the most kind and gentle soul. His smile and his laugh were so contagious, and you could feel his warmth even just passing by him in the hallway. I’m so thankful to have the high school memories that we do. You were a great friend. 

The last time I saw Lucas was almost 2 years ago, i was at the side of the road, it was snowing and I had a "very flat tire". Lucas saw me from up the street and was unaware of what was going on. He just came to say hello and offered to get a hot chocolate to catch up. I explained what was happening and immediately he started to help. He ran to get his little flat tire kit and tried to change my tire in the snow. He had even cut his hand in the process on the ice, but still insisted on helping me. During this time we shared so many laughs, and reminisced on old times. It felt like we had only seen each other the day before. Later that night I had messaged him to thank him again. He brought up some old inside jokes, even things that had slipped my mind. It just showed how much he valued his friendships with everyone and how much he cared about everyone he crossed paths with. 

Lucas, you will be missed as deeply as you are loved. Rest in peace pal.

I remember watching Lucas run around and swim with Todd as a young boy after going on those restaurant walking tours.  Those were fun times.  Lou, Penny and Todd, I wish I could give you each a big hug.  Take care of and be patient with yourselves and each other.  You are in my prayers.

Lucas had a way of making me feel so privileged and rewarded. With the small turned up corner of the  lip , his covert smile.  His eyes  expressed  it all , the event only you and he had noticed. It made you feel like you shared a secret . Maybe it was a secret that he had let you in even for just that moment  in time .I felt special . His quiet way of conducting himself. This man of few words will be missed. 

If you were lucky enough to have Lucas Ulbinas as a friend, congrats - you hit the friendship jackpot. His selflessness, kindness, and sense of exploration are qualities that can never be emulated. 

He treated the earth with respect, would crack jokes to cheer anyone up,  and always found a way to turn every day into an adventure. I have learned a lot from him and hope others aspire to be as amazing as him, too.

From treehouse hangs to camping trips to crazy concerts, we had too many good times to count. I was fortunate enough to call him a great friend and although we can’t make any new memories, I will always cherish the ones we have.

Years ago when you lived on Cornation Ave., I remember working on the boys bedroom, they had a fabulous tree house and the Red Hill Valley for a playground. No wonder Lucas was such an avid outdoorsman.

I want to express my deepest condolences to Lucas’ family. He will be missed by all who encountered his resilient, energetic, and wise spirit. 

Lucas and I were not particularly close in high school, however our paths crossed years later in 2015 when we were on the same flight to Iceland. He, Sandy, and I had rather expensive beers before they set off camping. Since then, Lucas and I kept in touch, sharing our mutual love for physical activity, adventure, travel, and the outdoors. 

We became particularly close over this last year. In May, before Lucas moved up Muskoka way, he dropped by my mum’s house where I was staying to give me some plants of his. Lucas was such a kind and thoughtful person, and this small gesture really lifted my spirits in the midst of all the pandemic madness. I was always in awe of the efforts he went to to bring smiles to the faces of the people around him. 

Over the last few months Lucas and I spoke regularly: swapping photos of my dogs and cats for photos of his turtle, sharing our love for cold lake dips well into the winter, and dreaming about adventures we each wanted to go on post-pandemic. It was clear to me that Lucas loved living up north. He loved the views, and the starry night skies just outside his front door. I remember him being particularly excited when his brother’s family visited. 

Lucas often lamented the rapid speed with which we are expected to work and live these days. He craved a simple and slow paced life- for this he was very wise. He consistently reminded me to “slow down and connect with nature”. Amongst the last messages between us, he wrote, “pleasant conversations, movement, and yummy food is all we need”. 


Lou,  Penny, Todd and families, I was so very sorry to hear of this devestating news. My heart aches for you all and I send you much love at this sorrowful time. My best memories of Lucas were his smiling face running around at the cottage. I'm so sorry that I didn't get to know him better as an adult - reading through all the lovely tributes here has given me a glimpse of what an amazing person he was.

To Penny, Todd, and Louis, our deepest and most heartfelt sympathies to Penny, Lou, Todd, and family. In the days, weeks,  months, and years to come, find solace and strength in each other,  and carry his living spirit in your hearts and to the rest of the world, sharing the best of his life.

I have only good memories of Lucas. I remember a boy who listened more than he spoke (a truly unique disposition) and a young man who was caring, gentle, and deeply thoughtful.

I met Lucas while we were both working at the Boys and Girls Club of Hamilton. So many fun memories of potlucks, pool parties, triathlon trainings and staff get togethers. I could always count on him to help me encourage staff to join us in swimming lengths.

You are superman in many people's eyes! We were at Julie Albanese house for a halloween party. As my friends know I love to document moments and take pictures. Lucas was about to walk down the stairs to the basement ( and let me tell you these stairs are no joke lol) and he fell feet first down them all while dressed like Superman. He instantly looked up and instead of being embarrassed he said "I was flying, just like superman" . I asked him how testing out his cape went and we just laughed uncontrollably for a few minutes. After I stopped laughing I took this picture down below. There are so many great memories  and now you're flying with your cape watching over all of us. You are forever and always loved by all your family and friends. Till next time Lucas!

    Lucas, where to even start. Your soul was one of the brightest and kindest ones I’ve had the pleasure of knowing! I, with the other “St. Eugener’s” grew up alongside you, learning, laughing, loving, guiding, teaching, and just overall experiencing life together for over 20 plus years. I know we are all eternally grateful to have met someone like you! 
  To me pictures are worth a thousand words and this one oddly shows how you were as a person; 
    You never had to be the centre of attention, not always the loudest in the room, always put others needs before your own, and always would go out of your way to make sure EVERYONE else was happy, comfortable and welcomed in not only your presence, but the presence of your home. Always the person that would do a good deed and did not need the whole world to know about it. Not to mention do it all with a smile on your face. Do not know how you did it Lucas! You were definitely one of the most genuine, and caring guys on this planet. 
    Thank you for being your adventurous and most authentic self, and bringing kindness into this crazy world.

I met Lucas when he was two years old, bright-eyed, a beautiful little boy, full of energy, and carefree with a curiosity to know everything about the world around him.    

As the years would pass, I had the pleasure of weaving in and out of Lucas’s life as our paths crossed.

At each crossing, I observed a refined version of the toddler I first met.  A boy, teenager, then handsome young man with the same sense of interest, adventure, kindness, and energy that became passion.  

Lucas’s curiosity led him to a life well travelled and to an assortment of talents.  His passion led him to mastery in all things he endeavored.  His kindness led him to be adored by everyone he encountered.    
  
My personal favourite was watching Lucas master the art of Poi.  He had a silent confidence and humor that allowed him to enjoy an audience, even when he fumbled.  And above all, he was simply a joy to be in the company of.    

I have a son who is now at the age when I first met Lucas.  Sadly, they will not meet.  As Lucas would trend towards the positive side of things, I will as well in sharing it is a small comfort to know, like us, my son can also be a lucky one, not by the experiences we have been fortunate to have, but in learning the tales of a man who if he endeavored to try, could flawlessly tip toe on water.

Where to start. 
Lucas was one of the first people I met when my parents split up and I moved schools. The rest seems like history. I feel like his family was truly a second family to mine. His dad to this day still calls me Eddie, after Edward Scissor Hands when I first met him as a child with long black hair. There are so many countless memories, from the parties in the treehouse that I basically grew up in, to bringing us to the best camping spot I have seen so far. If I could put them all in words I'd leave every memory I have here. He was the sweetest and most intelligent dude with an answer from everything. Taught me so much over time and inspires me to be more like him everyday. 
I'll never forget the handshake we have, and it hurts to know the three-way handshake we made with my cousin Mikey can't ever be recreated again. It was always that shake or a hug whenever we saw or were departing with eachother. When we went to Montreal for a weekend just the two of us I knew it was something special. That YOU were something special. And that was just a bump in the road of our story. I would have hoped we could have grown as old friends with families to pass these down to. Everything I do from here on out is for you. Love you so much brother. Truly the brightest spark in my life. I hope you and Jasper are looking out for me, I know he's probably so excited to see you. I'll see you when the time is right. XOX 

Lucas, was one of the warmest, kindest, genuine people I've had the pleasure of being friends with. Infact, being friends with Lucas was so much more.  In all my years, I've never met someone with such a thrill for adventure, you taught me that there is so much more to this world than my general perception, and you opened my eyes to so many new experiences and friends I've lost count.  Remembering the endless Treehouse hangs, camping trips, concert runs and a good ol Spy Seshes brings tears to my eyes but it also reminds me to be better. Be nicer to my neighbour, reach out to a friend, take interest in the interests of loved ones, and to never take a day for granted. You were that type of person, and I'll never forget it.

I  had the pleasure of working with Lucas at Gravenhurst Plumbing and Heating.  He always came in to work with a smile, he was dedicated and very knowledgeable.  You can tell Lucas took pride in his work, he will be missed.  My thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

When Lucas moved to Muskoka from Hamilton, it was  very apparent he was a friendly, outgoing guy.  I would get texts from him saying your friend so and so says hi and then give me updates on how they were doing.    He was such a pleasure to work with, it was great seeing his smiling face in the office in the mornings and having a quick catch up.  Lucas will be greatly missed.

I have nothing but warm memories of you. Most of them are silly high school memories, but warm all the same. We became friends in Grade 9 after Monika introduced me to you. We became like the 3 Musketeers after that, and for that I’m so grateful. I get flashbacks of us wrestling in the grass at lunch, and behaving like obnoxious children at the park outside my house. You were so fun! I was always laughing when you were around.

Our lives took us in different directions after high school, but that never meant our friendship was over. The last time I saw you was the summer before the pandemic. I was walking to meet a friend for lunch and you were passing by on your bike. You yelled my name from across the street, just to make sure the opportunity to say hi & catch up didn’t pass you by.  That was just the kind of person you were.

Thank you for being an integral part of why I loved my high school years. You are so loved and will be so missed.

Our sincere sympathy on the passing of  your beautiful son. Judging by the wealth of rembrances being shared here, he was loved by all and obviously had wonderful parents who raised him so well to be the man so many had cherished.   We keep you in our prayers and thoughts. 

When I look back on time spent with Lucas, I feel the kindness and sense of adventure he brought wherever he went.  Whether we were hanging out with friends, camping, snowboarding, or going to a music festival, his enthusiasm and positivity lifted us all up.  Lucas was a genuine guy and always a great friend.  He lives on in my memory and in the inspiration I’ve gained from the way he lived life to the fullest.

Lucas, you lit a fire under anyone you came into contact with. You bridged people together. Your positivity, wit and determination to learn something new was inspiring to everyone. The world needs a bit of all that and I am incredibly saddened of the news.

You taught me to see life through an unfiltered lense and I am forever grateful to call you a friend.
