It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Kathy (Katica) Warwick at Ridgeview Long Term Care Centre on September 9, 2023, at the age of 74, surrounded by her loving family after a valiant battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a rare neurodegenerative disorder.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 54 years, Douglas; her daughters Jane (Frank) and Diane (Jeremy). Cherished grandmother or as they call her “Chief” to Nieve, Rowan, Willow and Navy. Also missing her will be her sisters, who have been a constant source of love and support, Slavica (Gloria) Ceranic, Anne Barkovic (Drago) and nieces Tanya (Gregg), Maryanne (Dan), Karen (Chuck), Joanne (Dan) and their children. Sister-in-law of John and Janice Warneke and aunt of Sarah (Steve) Chipps and Dave (Maggie) Warneke and their children. Predeceased by her parents, Roko and Marija Sisul, parents-in-law, Joseph and Edith Warwick and brother-in-law Ivan Ceranic.
Kathy will be remembered for her strength and tenacity. As a young woman emigrating to Canada from Croatia, she worked hard doing anything she could to build a better life here, including worm and fruit picking and factory work at Allen Industries where she not only met her husband Doug, but also lifelong friends who they shared many special times with. Kathy had a flair for home decorating and later combined this with her sewing talents to create a successful drapery business where she built many long-lasting relationships.
Kathy’s main priority in life was her family and she took great pride in entertaining and bringing everyone together to make lasting memories. She was happiest cooking up a feast for family and friends. Everyone will miss her legendary cinnamon twists. Doug and Kathy shared a love for sports, Las Vegas, animals and spending time with their granddaughters.
Kathy was a remarkable and brave woman who endured the debilitating effects of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy with courage, strength and dignity. The family would like to extend their utmost gratitude and special thanks to the people who cared for Kathy through this difficult journey, most notably the incredible nurses and personal support workers in Gage House at Ridgeview Long Term Care Centre in Stoney Creek. You have all touched us with your compassion and loving care and we think of you as part of our family. Special thanks also to Dr. Carmela Tartaglia at the Movement Disorders Clinic at Toronto Western Hospital, Dr. Ralph Profetto and Dr. George Tiab.
Visitation at MARKEY-DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 1774 King Street East (at Kenilworth) on Wednesday, September 13 from 4-8 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Thursday, September 14, at 11 a.m. Reception to follow after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Kathy’s memory may be made to the Rossy Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) Centre, UHNfoundation.ca/tribute or to www.curepsp.org to help further research in hopes of one day finding a cure.
