Jacqueline was born on a snowy day on May 15, 1923 in Montmagny, Quebec to Prudent and Rebecca Gaumond. On the day of her birth, her family took her by horse-led sleigh to St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church to be baptized, as was the custom at the time. Jacqueline was the youngest of 14 children and was the last surviving member of her family. Jacqueline moved to Hamilton, Ontario in 1949 to work at the Cotton Mill on Sherman Avenue, and it was there that she met her late beloved husband, Abel Arthur Burke. Abel and Jacqueline were married on January 31, 1953, and spent 54 happy years traveling, hosting dinners and card parties, visiting many casinos, and, most importantly, spending time with family.
Despite losing her husband in 2007, Jacqueline persevered with her strong will to live and with the love and support of her family and friends. She was most happy being among the people she loved. Jacqueline is survived by her son Brian (Gail) and her daughter Susan Lepore (Vince). Jacqueline was a proud and loving grandmother of Andrea (Eric), Ryan, Rebecca Lepore-Dewaele (Jordan), and Nicholas. Jacqueline will be lovingly remembered by her many nieces and nephews and their families. Jacqueline was a talented seamstress, avid gardener, and an amazing cook. We will particularly miss her cream puffs, deviled eggs, and les pattes des cochon! She also had a passion for jigsaw puzzles and a love for red wine and anything chocolate. Jacqueline had an unwavering faith in God, with a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. André Bessette.
Throughout her life, Jacqueline maintained a sweet and soft-spoken demeanor and was loved by everyone. She was fiercely independent, living in her family home until she was 95 years old. Family and friends will be received at Cresmount Funeral Home, 322 Fennell Avenue East, Hamilton on Sunday, August 7, 2022 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church (Corpus Christi site), 1694 Upper James Street, Hamilton on Monday, August 8, 2022 at 10 a.m. Cremation will follow.
